SurvivalBlog presents another edition of The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods— a collection of news bits and pieces that are relevant to the modern survivalist and prepper from “JWR”. Our goal is to educate our readers, to help them to recognize emerging threats, and to be better prepared for both disasters and negative societal trends. You can’t mitigate a risk if you haven’t first identified a risk. Today, another tale of woe from the disarmed English populace.
A British Prepper Arrested for Gun Possession
Here is some typically breathless reporting from the UK: Dover doomsday ‘prepper’ hoarded 17 guns and thousands of bullets. A quote:
“While a person can legally hold up to 2,000 .22 bullets, police counted 2,300.”
JWR’s Comments: Unless this gent was a handloader, they must have meant cartridges, not bullets. Did the reporter realize that .22 ammo typically comes packed in cartons (or “bricks”) of 500, and that 2,300 rounds will fit in a shoebox? Just as a point of reference, I had more than 3,000 .22 cartridges stored before I reached my 16th birthday. My parents would buy it for me in increments of four or five bricks at a time, when it went on sale. That is what I always asked for, for birthday and Christmas presents. Standard .22 LR cartridges were then just 1.5 cents per round. Nowadays, they are closer to 10 cents per round.

The Remote Car Hacking Threat is Growing for Imported Cars
More import car hacking, reported on Twitter: “Earlier this year, we were able to remotely unlock, start, locate, flash, and honk any remotely connected Honda, Nissan, Infiniti, and Acura vehicles, completely unauthorized, knowing only the VIN number of the car.” JWR’s Comment: This is another reason to not buy any vehicle with Internet-connected electronics. And if you do have one, then be sure to physically disable its wireless connectivity.

Couple Survives a Car Tumble 300 Feet Into a California Canyon
Reader F.J. sent this: A couple survived after their car tumbled 300 feet into a California canyon. They had no cell service but were rescued after their iPhone detected the fall. F.J. pulled this quote:
“Mr. Zelada looked for Ms. Fields’s cellphone and found it about 10 yards from their car, with the screen smashed. Even though there was no cell service, the phone had detected that there had been a crash, Ms. Fields said. Her iPhone 14 gave her a prompt to contact emergency services through a new feature called Emergency SOS via satellite.
In places with no cellular or Wi-Fi coverage, the service allows users to send emergency messages via satellites hundreds of miles above the Earth, according to Apple. The phone relays the answers users give to a few short questions to an emergency call center, along with the user’s location, according to Apple.”
