The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods:

SurvivalBlog presents another edition of The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods— a collection of news bits and pieces that are relevant to the modern survivalist and prepper from “HJL”. Of special interest is “EARTH EX” as series of emergency exercises scheduled for Wednesday, August 23, 2017 (tomorrow). You might want to know if anyone in your local area is participating.

First Amendment

Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe signed an executive order last week. This order effectively halted demonstrations at the Lee Monument for the next 90 days in Richmond. While his intentions may be good (he trying to avoid a repeat of Charlottesville violence) there is just one problem with it. It violates the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. McAuliffe denies that his order conflicts with the amendment. However, there is more than one constitutional law expert that says it does. Thanks to reader C.S. for the link.

Second Amendment

The Oregon Governor, Kate Brown, signed a bill establishing “Extreme Risk Protection Orders” forcing subjects to surrender their firearms. Any police or a member of the subjects family or household can file a petition with the court. This could lead to an order prohibiting firearms possession if the court believes the subject poses an imminent risk to themselves or others. Of course, we all know that police and family members never lie about such things, especially in domestic cases. As Reader W.W. put it: “This is why you hide a gun or two from everyone!”

Reader D.S. sent in this article on Charlottesville mayor’s idiocy. Apparently the “car attack”  has spurred the mayor to declare that concealed carry permits should be limited. We don’t even know the full story of yet. Already conflicting reports are emerging and the driver of the car may not have been “attacking”. I’m still trying to figure out how a car could be concealed on a person to be used in self defense…but such is the logic of the progressive left.

SurvivalBlog would like to point out that Virginia and Oregon are two states that voted for Hillary in the last election. While we are on the subject of the recent violence involving AntiFa, it is worth noting that as of Monday night, the Whitehouse.gov petition to “Formally recognize AntiFa as a terrorist organization” has gained over 230,000 signatures. Only 100.000 signatures were needed to trigger a response by the administration.

Emergency Response Exercise

Reader T.J. sent in this notice of “EARTH EX” the Emergency All-sector Response Transnational Hazard Exercise. (Honestly, do they have to try so hard to pick names that spell words with the acronym?) The exercise will be taking place on August 23, 2017 and will include things like “long duration power outages with cascading failure of infrastructure”, “Emergency Communications”, and “Executive and senior operational decision-making”. T.J. also points out that “Sometimes these exercises and tests do not go as planned. Chernobyl comes to mind…”

Rescue Streamer

Reader M.H. wrote in asking if any SurvivalBlog reader has experience with “See/Rescue” streamer. If you are an avid boater or wilderness explorer, it seems like this might be a handy tool to carry along just-in-case. You would probably never need it, but as the saying goes – it’s better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. It does seem pricey to me, but as we see frequent search-and-rescue campaigns afer every boat collision, this just might be worth it.

Bad haircut

The not-so-random violence of the left has escalated to the point where a bad haircut can get you mistaken for a neo-nazi (or at least what the attacker thinks one looks like.) Joshua Witt had just gotten out of his car when he was attacked and stabbed without warning or provocation by someone who thought he looked like a neo-nazi.

News Tips:

Please send your news tips to HJL. (Either via e-mail of via our Contact form.) These are often especially relevant, because they come from folks who watch news that is important to them. Due to their diligence and focus, we benefit from fresh “on target” news. We often “get the scoop” on news that is most likely ignored (or reported late) by mainstream American news outlets. Thanks!

  1. Problem – Reaction – Solution.
This is a manufactured tactic used by the Left/Democrats
and in this case Gov. McAuliffe specifically
    to deny free speech.

Remember what Rahm says: Never let a crisis go to waste.

  2. Sea/Rescue Streamer comes in two sizes. THEY ARE A VERY GOOD THING TO HAVE! Did I make myself clear? Watch eBay for used ones as they don’t wear out. The newer one have a chemical glow stick to enhance their night time visability. I sold a couple of the smaller ones (life jacket size) but kept my larger one to keep with my life raft. These are designed to replace the old dye markers which pilots carried in case they ditched. The dye dispersed over a fairly short time. The streamer “paints” an orange ribbon pointing to you. It’s floating plastic sheet that you unroll. the smaller ones are 6″ by 25 “, the larger ones are 12” by 40′ if I recall correctly. If you are floating in a life jacket with the Coast Guard helicopter searching you will not think it was very expensive. they are also usable on land. Do a web search.
