SurvivalBlog presents another edition of The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods— a collection of news bits and pieces that are relevant to the modern survivalist and prepper from “HJL”. We are reminded today of why a surveillance state is so bad.
Surveillance State
Orwell, Solzhenitsyn and others have warned society of the dangers of a surveillance state for many years. While in the past, the technology necessary to wrap up every single citizen in its reach didn’t exist, that hurdle no longer exists. With the advent of smart phones, we willingly give out private information to not just the state, but private corporations and organizations that profit from the data. Cameras and the computing power to process the billions of images are relatively inexpensive and prolific now as well. Reader H.L. sent in this article on the dangers of becoming a society that is so heavily monitored with the people being so completely oblivious
Million Gun Owner Blitz
The Association of New Jersey Rifle and Pistol Clubs (ANJRPC) to email every member of the legislature at least once every single day between now and June 7, demanding that pending magazine language be defeated or that at least real grandfathering be added. If you live in New Jersey, you can find a list of legislature’s emails online and you can use this sample message as a template for your own:
I am one of New Jersey’s million law-abiding gun owners who will be turned into a criminal with the flip of a switch if you vote for S102 or A2761 (firearms magazine ban) when it comes up for a vote in the coming days. Criminals and madmen laugh at hardware bans like this and ignore them – the only ones who follow them are honest citizens like me, who are not part of the problem and who are ironically made more vulnerable and less able to defend themselves by bans like these.
Please don’t turn me into a criminal for keeping property I legally purchased in the past, and please don’t force me to destroy, give up, or modify my legally owned property. Vote NO on S102 or A2761, or amend to add meaningful grandfathering that protects the property I have lawfully purchased.
California’s New Gun Laws
Gun registration is all about gun confiscation. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. In California, the district attorney filed a dozen felony gun charges against a prominent farming family because the owner tried to follow the law and register his firearm. Sadly, he wasn’t aware that his firearm qualified as illegally modified based solely on the photo that he uploaded to the registration website. This led the state to raid his home where they found a dozen firearms, two suppressors, a multi-burst trigger (whatever that is), and a whopping 230 rounds of ammunition.
I mean really, who needs that much ammo! While they couldn’t charge him with excessive ammo, they have charged him with 12 felonies even knowing that California laws are changing so rapidly the law enforcement has trouble keeping the laws straight. Get out while you still can from this communist controlled state! Thanks to reader T.Z. for the link.
Ireland’s Next Step
After overturning the constitutional law that banned abortion in Ireland, the socialist progressives didn’t even wait for the shock to set in before they announced their nest step. Health Minister Simon Harris has proposed legislation that would set up buffer zones around the future murder abortion facilities being planned. This would set up an area that would make it illegal for pro-life advocates to reach out to women outside those abortion clinics making sure that the women can’t hear from those pleading for one last chance for the innocent child’s life and provide support for the mothers. Thanks to reader D.S. for the link.
Homeschooling
You would be amazed at the number of people who think that they can’t homeschool their kids and as a result, leave them in the progressive/leftist/liberal indoctrination camps commonly refered to as public school. Reader DSV sent in this article that shows a few things about how homeschooling works for prepper minded parents. Did you know that you already homeschool your kids? Unless there are specific laws denying you the right to homeschool your kids, you should be moving in that direction. We did it all at once, deciding to make a go of it on one salary, but there are other ways too. Take a look at this article if homeschooling is something that you wish you could do too.
Fake News in India
In a bizarre story that reader DSV sent in, A southern district of India has had police officers traveling from village to village early this month telling people that messages they received on their smart phones through WhatsApp are fake. Apparently messages that claimed a gang from northern India had arrived to kidnap children resulted in a few deaths when villagers took to beating and hanging innocent strangers who were suspected of being these gangs. Authorities say there is no truth to the messages and that WhatsApp is being used as a vehicle to cause mayhem and spread rumors.

Please send your news tips to HJL. (Either via e-mail of via our Contact form.) These are often especially relevant, because they come from folks who watch news that is important to them. Due to their diligence and focus, we benefit from fresh “on target” news. We often “get the scoop” on news that is most likely ignored (or reported late) by mainstream American news outlets. Thanks!
If you are on Facebook, I don’t want to be your friend because you voluntarily give up more data – location, contacts, phone calls to Mark Zuckerberg that you would be outraged if it were the NSA collecting even half the data. And the NSA, FBI, etc. just has to ask Zuck since Facebook owns the data, not you.
Some people say they will not give up information under torture, but a prominent tech talk radio host had to recreate his account after leaving because his wife was upset how her profile showed she was married to “blank”.
Also, do NOT put any pictures of your home or kids or anything personal – that will follow them through life. But Grandma needs to see the latest pictures of the grandkids! Go to Walgreens, print them out and mail them and make sure Granny doesn’t know how to use a scanner.
I am amazed at the pictures of children (with their names) I see posted or that people post where they are or that they are going on vacation. How many stories of child abductions and home robberies does one need?
I don’t even post pictures of my cat.
Home School Legal Defense is an excellent protection and resource for homeschoolers. They can be joined for an annual or lifetime fee. They have lots of information available even for non-members on the laws in each state. For members they offer legal council and protection.

We need to stop saying please to our servants when they are being mutinous. The members of the legislature are our servants, and please is the wrong verbage when they are screwing up. Please is the verbage of the weak or helpless when used in the context of an abusive situation. Enough of the pleading, break out the whippings. Let them know they are not in charge, we will not comply, and we will not tolerate further stupidity. Ropes can be put to use if necessary.
Thumbs UP!!
I’ll second that!

Would you call me crazy if I suggested that survival as a discourse has relationships to the surveillance state?
As survival can be defined by security, a question to ask is, security for what and for whom? Insecurity looks to be pretty profitable for the surveillance state.
Old Gray Wolf gets it. If this doesn’t work, perhaps Americans should ponder this example of REAL AMERICANS: “when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism…..”
Perhaps those in New Jersey should move to a free state. But maybe they enjoy paying the high taxes and bad gun laws. We have low taxes and good gun laws here in Louisiana.
Left NJ when I was 18 after I paid my first tax bill and figured out what the rest of the state was like when I started working to support myself. I rarely go back. A few of my NJ relatives, who consider themselves conservatives, would be viewed as a left leaning “sort of” liberal in other states. If you remain in these states like NJ, NY, CT and CA then stop complaining. You have a choice – you can vote with your feet and move. If you stay in a state where there is no hope of reversing the liberalist agenda then it’s all on you and frankly you are enabling it via the tax system. “But, but, my elderly mother lives here and she won’t leave”. Then leave her and go back to visit or take her with you. If I sound harsh it’s because I’ve lived in many states and have also traveled internationally and it amazes me at how easily people accept without protest their local, state and federal governments bleeding them dry. So you might want to think about changing the wording on that letter about new restrictions on gun ownership to, “I WILL leave this state and take my tax revenue with me as it’s clear you are not here to protect my freedoms, but to take them away.” I can guarantee you your local NJ government won’t care… so move to a place where you can strengthen the position of conservatives by doing business in that state, voting and teaming up with like minded people that are far more numerous and free than what you have now.
Well said. I moved from NY 3 years ago, should have done it years before. I was so sick and tired of the liberal progressive agenda being shoved down my throat…. that very phrase is what made it make sense in my head, despite the (falsely) perceived hardships.
I voted with my feet, my family has been far better off since. Don’t let the fear of the hardships of moving keep you planted in a place you’re not happy. GET OUT, and don’t look back. In a year or two, you will wonder why it took you so long, I promise.
