SurvivalBlog’s News From The American Redoubt

This weekly column features news stories and event announcements from around the American Redoubt region. (Idaho, Montana, eastern Oregon, eastern Washington, and Wyoming.) Much of the region is also more commonly known as The Inland Northwest. We also mention companies of interest to preppers and survivalists that are located in the American Redoubt region. Today, we focus on a bald eagle poaching prosecuation.  (See the Montana section.)

Region-Wide

Some serious Eco-LARPers, gone wild, in Idaho, Montana, and the eastern fringe of the Cascades, in Washington: Living Wild: Surviving with the Means of the Stone Age — Survival DocumentaryJWR’s Comments: This was as seen through the eyes of a European film crew. The sight of those avocados and some of the leather and hides that looked like they were mail-ordered from Tandy Leather Company seemed a bit incongruous. The obviously staged scene of them scaling a cliff was hilarious since an inadvertent wide shot revealed a much easier route up the mountain, just nearby. Oh well, I’ll award them an A for Drama, and a D for Authenticity.

Montana

Two men accused of illegally killing Golden, Bald Eagles for sale on black marketJWR’s Comment:  The Great Unspoken in this article is that the illegal trade in eagle feathers, heads, and claws is primarily driven by Native American buyers, who want to own authentic headdresses and other accoutremants.  This trade only gets publicity when non-Indians run afoul of the law  — usually in poaching or their involvement in taxidermy.

Montana’s legislative logjam, as seen from the perspective of a left-winger: A 2023 Political Recap: The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly. (The Flathead Beacon is an advertising tabloid with a Dyed-in-the-Wool Democrat staff.)  The article, written by Sheila Hogan, the Executive Director of the Montana Democratic Party, begins:

“Skyrocketing property taxes. Astronomical energy rate increases. Thousands of homes that are unaffordable to most Montanans. And yet more big tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy, while the rest of us are left to foot the bill.”

JWR’s Comment:  Perhaps someone should remind Sheila Hogan that in Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming, the top 2% of income earners provide more than 50% of all state income tax revenue for their states.
