This weekly column features news stories and event announcements from around the American Redoubt region. (Idaho, Montana, eastern Oregon, eastern Washington, and Wyoming.) Much of the region is also more commonly known as The Inland Northwest. We also mention companies of interest to preppers and survivalists that are located in the American Redoubt region. Today, we recognize the 50th anniversary Sunshine Mine disaster. (See the Idaho section.)

50 years since Sunshine Mine disaster. A quote:
“Monday marks 50 years since one of the darkest days in the Silver Valley.
On May 2, 1972 a fire erupted in Shoshone County’s Sunshine Mine. More than 170 miners were deep inside and trapped when the fire erupted.
Crews worked to evacuated the workers but after 80 were lifted to safety, the hoist operator died from smoke inhalation. Ninety one workers were killed from carbon monoxide poisoning.
A week later, two miners who had found a safe zone were rescued from nearly a mile beneath the ground.”

Montana rancher tells House ag committee concerns about meatpacker consolidation. The article begins:
“A Montana rancher gave lawmakers in Washington, D.C. an earful Tuesday as he spoke about the monopoly the nation’s four largest meatpackers have on the industry – and the toll that’s taking on Montanans.
Gilles Stockton lives in Grass Range and is also the president of the Montana Cattleman’s Association.
He spoke before the U.S. House Committee on Agriculture and begged lawmakers to enact legislation to make the industry more competitive.
Four corporations currently control 85 percent of the cattle market, and Stockton says that’s made it difficult for many ranchers to stay afloat.
Stockton alleges those corporations are squeezing both ends of the supply changes, and he believes ranchers are being paid unsustainable prices.
He says that monopoly also has meant higher prices at the grocery store.”

Free gas: Sunriver Resort’s latest incentive in bid to fill about 200 open summer jobs. A pericope:
“With summer just around the corner and hundreds of job openings still to fill, Sunriver Resort is on the hunt for willing workers, with a new perk in their pocket — free gas, $300,000 worth.
In a bid to attract and retain employees needed to fill over 400 summer seasonal positions, the resort said Wednesday it will help pay for employees’ gas for the next four months, through a gift card distribution.
“There are certain expenses that have gone up more than the national average on inflation and obviously, filling up your tank, is clearly one,” resort Managing Director Tom O’Shea said Wednesday.
The resort’s $300,000 gas reimbursement fund will provide each resort employee with a gas gift card, which gives them $100 a month, from May to August.”
