The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods:

SurvivalBlog presents another edition of The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods— a collection of news bits and pieces that are relevant to the modern survivalist and prepper from “HJL”. The Internet of Things continues encroaching on your privacy.

Jury Nullification

Jury nullification is a constitutional right that the citizens have against bad laws. It is basically the last line of defense when a police state has passed bad laws and is charging citizens under them. However, in Michigan, Keith Wood was passing out pamphlets on a public sidewalk explaining this little known and little used concept to potential jurors when he was arrested and charged with “attempting to influence a jury”. Disturbingly, not only prosecutors and judges perceived guilt on his part, but the very people he was trying to educate as a jury found him guilty.

The Editors’ Quote of the Day:

“the Lord your God hath multiplied you, and, behold, ye are this day as the stars of heaven for multitude. (The Lord God of your fathers make you a thousand times so many more as ye are, and bless you, as he hath promised you!)” – Deuteronomy 1:10-11 (KJV)

Emergency Checklists, by M.B.

Where’s your emergency checklists? The worst part about emergency situations and disasters is that they never happen when it is convenient. It’s 2 AM and you awake to find someone pounding on your door. The dam has been breached and you have maybe 30 minutes to get to high ground. What would you do? How do you know what steps to take? What items would you take with you, and how would you prioritize things?

Emergency Chaos

Maybe you live in New Orleans or one of the other Gulf States. A category 5 hurricane is bearing down on you. Do you know what supplies you need and do you know what you currently have? Do you have the necessary medications, first aid, and firearms? “Where is everything at?” you think to yourself, as you frantically search around in the darkness groping for batteries for your flashlight.

Or maybe you hear and feel a huge explosion. The ground literally shakes underneath you as a natural gas pipeline explodes down the street. Your cell phone is broken to smithereens after it fell off the kitchen counter onto the floor below. You need to reach your son and daughter, but you do not remember their cell phone numbers! Oh goodness why didn’t I write them down somewhere?

Freeze Dried Friday

Welcome to Freeze Dried Friday on SurvivalBlog! We’ve been making so many things in the Harvest Right Freeze Dryer that we want to share some of them with you. If you have something wonderful you’ve prepared in your freeze dryer that you would like to share with SurvivalBlog readers, take a photo of it and send it in along with a description. We might just feature you here! Today we’ll have a quick note about a shaft seal failure. But first:

Keeping the Freeze Dryer Filled

Harvest season is getting close here. Some herbs are just about ready to be harvested, and I can see the garden produce weighing down the plants in the garden. But they just aren’t quite ready yet. So what do you do with you’re Harvest Right Freeze Dryer while waiting for the bountiful harvest to come in?

A trip to Costco (or similar) for their fresh fruit is always an option. Costco is known for their fantastic selection of beautiful fruit, but it comes with a drawback. Unless you are a restaurant or juicing on a regular basis, it’s tough to use it all before it starts going bad. That’s true, unless you have a Freeze Dryer, of course!

The Antifa Threat Spiral: Some Safe Predictions on the Coming Unsafe Era- Part 2

In Part 1 of this article, I pointed to the rapid post-election growth of the leftist so-called “anti-fascist” (Antifa) movement. This movement has some clear parallels to the draft protests of the late 1960s and early 1970s.  Now, in Part 2 , I’ll further describe how the threat spirals will likely develop.

The Crypto Guys

It is safe to assume that cryptography and novel communications techniques will be used by leftist domestic terror organizations, as they internally develop their tradecraft. It is very likely that anonymous mail forwarders, Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) and a variety of cryptographic tools are already in use by Antifa. This can only be expected to expand, with the passage of time. I anticipate that the Antifa groups will assume that all publicly-available VPN services and encryption sites are fully co-opted or even the creations of national intelligence organizations. Therefore, some of their cells will be devoted to creating their own crypto tools and communications tunnels. The challenge for the intelligence agencies will be in detecting and countering that infrastructure.  This will probably create a whole series of spirals, just unto itself.

Going Full Cyber

The growing threat of cyber warfare cannot be over-stressed. The 2016 release of NSA-contracted cyber intrusion and data extraction tools marked a turning point in 21st Century cyberwarfare. The release of these powerful tools into the wild has huge implications for future wars of any scope or level. Whether it is low-level domestic terror by a lone hacker, attacks by small cells, or even unrestricted warfare between major world powers, these tools will undoubtedly come into play. Clearly, the mass media pundits did not appreciate just how devastating these hacking tools could be, in the wrong hands. (If they had, then the uproar would have been much louder and more sustained.)

Letter: EMP Foil Wrap

Good morning, Hugh and James,

I’ve posed questions before RE: EMP protection, and now I have one or two more.

Survival blog had a recent series of posts about how to EMP-proof steel ammo cans; I found them enlightening. but they sparked some questions.

A Faraday Cage

The purpose of a Faraday cage is to completely enclose the item one wishes to protect with a conductive material. This will not permit passage of electromagnetic energy of certain wavelengths. The usual approach to Faraday cages is to exclude all wavelengths of electromagnetic energy. Different electronic components may also be susceptible to energy of different wavelengths. An EMP event may include myriad wavelengths of electromagnetic energy. This creates the preference for solid material, rather than mesh, EMP protection.

The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods:

SurvivalBlog presents another edition of The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods— a collection of news bits and pieces that are relevant to the modern survivalist and prepper from “HJL”. You’ll find some interesting items in the Firearms category today!

Military

President Trump has issued a ban on Transgenders serving in any capacity in the military, reversing outgoing president Obama’s ruling. This is an important ruling for the health of the military. The military is a different world than the civilian world. Because of the performance required and the circumstances surrounding the military person, many of what we consider “rights” are actually signed away in order to create a functional high-pressure society. The uniformity needed to obtain optimal force performance also doesn’t allow for the same range of self expression that our society wants to force.

Reader T.J. sent in this interesting video showing an Egyptian army tank driver’s response to the threat posed by a suicide bomber. It took less than five seconds for the driver to gun the engine of the tank and roll over the car. The maneuver allowed many of the surrounding people to escape to safety while disabling the car. There were obviously casualties when the bomb was eventually set off, but far fewer than there would have been. Kudos to that tank driver!

Preparedness Notes for Wednesday – July 26, 2017

On Jul 26th, 1931, a swarm of grasshoppers descended on crops throughout the American heartland, devastating millions of acres. Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota, already in the midst of a bad drought, suffered tremendously from this disaster. The July 1931 swarm was said to be so thick that it blocked out the sun and one could shovel the grasshoppers with a scoop. Cornstalks were eaten to the ground and fields left completely bare. Since the early 1930s, swarms have not been seen in the United States. However, North Africa and parts of the Middle East continue to experience problems with insect swarms, which sometimes includes as many as 1 billion bugs.

The Antifa Threat Spiral: Some Safe Predictions on the Coming Unsafe Era- Part 1

The rapid post-election growth of the left’s so-called “anti-fascist” (Antifa) movement is alarming. This movement has some clear parallels to the draft protests of the late 1960s. These protests spawned a wave of domestic terrorism with groups like the Weather Underground, the Black Panther Party, the BLA, the FALN, and the SLA.  Anyone reading this who is under my age is probably missing out. This is because they don’t have a good recollection of just how profoundly violent the late 1960s and early 1970s were in these United States. Bombings, fake bomb scares, riots, arson, bank robberies, airliner hijackings, attempted assassinations, and kidnappings were all too commonplace.

This period of upheaval all started a few years earlier with large college campus anti-war/anti-draft protests staged by the SDS. But some of those “activists” spun out of control.  Soon, an amalgamation of inner city blacks and privileged college whites became increasingly radicalized. Although the FALN bombing campaign continued into the early 1980s, the most memorable climactic event of this age of domestic terrorism came in May of 1974 with the much-publicized SLA shootout. Near the end of the “Golden Age of Terror”, President Gerald Ford survived two assassination attempts in rapid succession–both perpetrated by white women.  One was a wacky Manson family follower but the other was a dyed-in-the-wool leftist and a fan of the SLA.

For some fascinating reading about this turbulent era, I highly recommend Bryan Burrough’s book Days of Rage.  The gist of his book was well-captured in a recent book review at the Lawfare blog.

History Rhymes

There is an oft-quoted modern proverb:  “History doesn’t repeat, but it often rhymes.” I posit that a similar age of terror is now dawning in the United States, as radicalized Clintonista uber-Democrats ramp up from street protests to overt acts of terrorism. (The attempted assassination of Congressman Scalise by James Hodgkinson was just a precursor event. In the tech world, Hodgkinson would be called an early adopter.) I predict that the greatest threat will come from the radical left, rather than from the right.

Most alarmingly, we now live in the 21st Century era of cyberwarfare, neurotoxins, and off-the-shelf quadracopter drones. So the potential damage that just a few malcontents can wreak is enormous.

“Mother Of All Bubbles” Keeps Gold Price In Focus

o  o  o

Spot gold was down $4 an ounce by noon on Tuesday, but silver was up slightly. Since January 1st, 2017, spot gold is up 7.81% and silver is up 2%. If the global economic crisis that many pundits anticipate doe indeed materialize this coming October, then the precious metals will become truly precious.

As Gas Prices Fall to 12-Year Low, Schumer Claims Gas Prices ‘Never Go Down’

o  o  o

Copper futures jumped 3% to $2.82 on Tuesday. That increase is part of a general rise of 25.14% for the year. Methinks this has more to do with the beating of global War Drums than it does with confidence in a rebounding consumer economy.
