Polio-Like Disease

According to this article sent in by reader H.L. there have been 62 confirmed reports of “acute flaccid myelitis” (AFM) across 22 states in the U.S. This is a disease very similar to Polio. The CDC says that states are not mandated to report the numbers to the CDC so the number of cases could be higher. While the disease currently remains fairly rare, the similarities to Polio are causing concern. The disease affects the spinal cord and can cause partial paralysis. It mostly affects children and young adults and can be caused by a variety of causes like toxins in the environment, genetic disorders or other viruses like West Nile or adenovirus.

The State of the American People

True to form, criminals are having a heyday in Florida. While anyone with any sense and/or compassion are concerned first about life saving and then about survival, criminals have other thoughts. According to this article sent in by reader G.P., armed looters are targeting homes and businesses that remain without electricity. Deputies have arrested quite a few looters who started just as soon as the storm abated. In some cases, the occupants are actually home, but the normal security of locked doors and alarms are non-existent. So far, there have only been reports of theft, but with the looters being armed, it’s only a matter of time before someone gets shot or stabbed.

A SurvivalBlog reader sent in this link to Western Rifle Shooters Association on a conversation that occurred during Hurricane Michael. The exchange happened as several men were trying to lash doors shut while winds were howling at 140 mph through the school hallway. The author and his daughter were the only people who had a leatherman to cut rope with. Even during this desperate life-saving tactic, there were those who were appalled the author had a knife at school. While not descriptive of all Floridians, I fear that the U.S. is filled to the brim with people like those described. This story is actually reprinted from the comments of another article on masculinity. Both are worth a read. Note that there is foul language in this article.

October 19th is the birthday of three notables– the late Alexander Zeisal “Zus” Bielski (born 1912), investor Jim Rogers (born 1942), and James Howard Kunstler (born 1948). Kunstler is well known to SurvivalBlog readers as the author of the novel World Made by Hand and the nonfiction book The Long Emergency. A fictionalized portrayal of Zus Bielski is seen in the movie Defiance. This movie was loosely based on the excellent book Defiance: The Bielski Partisans by Nechama Tec.

Economic collapse is not an event — it is a process. I’ve been saying this since the initial 2008 crash, and I suppose I will keep saying it until it burns into people’s minds because I don’t think that it is a widely understood concept. When alternative analysts talk about financial collapse, we are not talking about something that suddenly happens out of the blue, we are talking about an ongoing decline that occurs in stages. This decline is happening today in the U.S. and around the world, and it has been accelerating since the chaos of 2008. When we bring up the reality of collapse, we are referring to something that is happening NOW, not something waiting on the distant horizon.

The reason why some analysts can see it and others cannot is most likely due to the delusions surrounding market bubbles. These fiscal fantasy worlds are artificially created by central bank intervention and represent an attempt to mislead the populace on the true health of the system — for a limited time. People with foresight see beyond the false data of the bubble to the core economic reality; other people see only the bubble and nothing else.

When it comes to stock markets, bond markets, forex markets and the general casino economy, much of the public has a terrible inability to look beyond the next month let alone the next year. If the markets appear good now, the assumption is that they will always be good. If the central banks have intervened for the past 10 years, the assumption is they will intervene for the next 10 years.

The OECD has clearly had its feelings hurt by people lawfully avoiding taxes, through expatriation. Here is the OECD’s report: Residence/Citizenship by investment schemes. Some ground truth: If you obtain new citizenship, you then come under a new sovereignty. Your old sovereign’s taxing minions can no longer lay claim to your substance. Of course you might just be trading one task master for another, so don’t expatriate without carefully weighing all of the costs and benefits.

It is noteworthy that several of the countries mentioned in the OECD’s Bad Boy list will sound familiar to SurvivalBlog readers, as potential offshore retreat locales.

The intent of my article is to first, bring to view the reluctance issues we have that keep us from securing our stuff, and also to think ahead when actually doing it. The only thing worse than not hiding your preps, is hiding them poorly!

In part 1, we began listing and addressing some of the common arguments against caching. Let’s continue with this.

I Will Defend My Stuff If Necessary

Will you defend your stuff? Have you thought all of that through? If you are caught off guard with a couple of nasty people or a group pointing assault weapons at your spouse and children, are you going to start pulling that trigger? Probably not.

It is far safer to have all your stuff far away and give up what you have to “fight” another day. I brought up points in my poem from part 1 that point to the forefront too. Everyone knows your best laid plans are rarely how you envisioned them. Also, chances are you will never have a heads-up that someone is about to loot your goodies. You must be prepared enough to walk away and know you still have supplies. Besides, if you did decide to get shot for the cause and your family was spared, where does that leave your family? It probably leaves a dead husband with a pissed off wife because you died for “stuff” or footing it to the FEMA camps alone, hoping for scraps of foods and praying they are not forced to stay there. Think it through.

The Biblio Blog has a list for you. Whether you are prepping for hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, economic crises or any other man-made or natural disaster, they have a list of books for you. This list is their top ten recommendations that should be on every persons book shelf. Some of the books, we are very familiar with and others not so much, but they all look good. I especially like the last book that they recommend. That one is truly indispensable.

Gun Control Proposals

Pat Cascio, SurvivalBlog’s Senior Field Gear Editor, sent in this article on six different ways that Nancy Pelosi plans to take away your firearms freedoms. Should democrats gain control of the House in this coming election, she will most certainly be the Speaker of the House. The Washington Times has reported that Nancy believes it is more important to secure more gun control than it is to win future elections and is fully prepared to put her career at risk to pursue this agenda. This article lists six specific proposals that she has mentioned that she will go after. These include the standard “Assault Weapons” ban and “Universal Background Checks” as well as a few others like gun confiscation laws and dropping the Hearing Protection Act.

On this day in 1835, Texans approve a resolution to create the Texas Rangers– a corps of armed and mounted lawmen designed to “range and guard the frontier between the Brazos and Trinity Rivers”. After winning their revolutionary war with Mexico the following year, Texans decided to keep the Rangers, both to defend against Indian and Mexican raiders and to serve as the principal law enforcement authority along the sparsely populated Texan frontier.

Movies & Television:

I was a bit disappointed by Season 3 of The Man in the High Castle. It is now available in its entirety for Amazon Prime binge watchers. The acting, cinematography, sets, costumes, vehicles, props, and the general production value were all top notch. However, the script writers of Season 3 felt obliged to make two blatant bows toward 21st Century homosexual liberal culture, even though the show was set in a parallel universe version of 1962.  Homosexual couples kissing in public, in 1962?  That is simply not believable. What a waste of a big budget. Philip K. Dick is now doubtless spinning in his grave. For the record, Philip K. Dick once wrote: “Just because something bears the aspect of the inevitable, one should not, therefore, go along willingly with it.”
