Grizzly bear shot, killed during bear attack investigation. The article begins:

“A grizzly bear was shot and killed Friday, while officials from Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks were investigating the scene of a Thursday attack near West Yellowstone.

A post on Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks region three Facebook page says a group of seven investigators, including FWP game wardens and bear specialists, as well as Forest Service personnel, revisited the site Friday to assess ongoing public safety risks and continue the investigation.

“They yelled and made continuous noise as they walked toward the site to haze away any bears in the area. Before they reached the site, a bear began charging the group. Despite multiple attempts by all seven people to haze away the bear, it continued its charge. Due to this immediate safety risk, the bear was shot and died about 20 yards from the group.”

New Pepperball Products, by Pat Cascio

I tested several Pepperball products in the past and was quite pleased with the performance. Now, the makers of Pepperball have come out with two new products. Well, they were actually introduced more than a year ago at the 2020 SHOT Show. However, due to the COVID-19 virus outbreak, everything was put on hold, because they couldn’t get their products in hand for the consumer.

Having spent half my life in the martial arts, I taught my students a good number of self-defense moves, some lethal and many not-so-lethal. And, certainly, not all attacks on you will be lethal – at least, not to start with. Some attacks might be someone coming up behind you and grabbing your purse and running away with it. I don’t think that would qualify as a lethal attack, and lethal force would not be called for. However, if someone were to attack you and start beating you to the ground, to get whatever it is that they want from you, then that could easily turn from a simple assault to something lethal in the blink of an eye. So, in a case like that, lethal force may be justified to save your life. It can be a very fine line between a simple assault and one that can turn lethal, and you’d best figure it out in short order. You can’t justify shooting someone who simply grabbed your purse and ran off with it. However, if someone knocked you down, and started punching and kicking you, with the intent of killing you – then we have a lethal attack, and you’ll need to react accordingly.

I’ve carried a handgun on my side for all of my adult life, and there were times, when using it would have been justified. However, sometimes you can talk an attacked “down” or use “verbal judo” to defuse the situation. Or, you can simply put an end to an attack without the actual use of deadly force. A short story: I used to love to go fishing in the early morning hours, as soon as the sun would come up, in a local pond in Eastern Oregon. And as a rule, I was the only one in the park. One morning, I noticed a beat-up Ford Bronco in the parking lot, and there were two late teen or early-20s young men there, with a teenage girl. They were all dirty and it appeared that they hadn’t changed clothes in quite some time. While fishing some distance from them, one of the young men, started to circle around me – and I turned and looked at him, and he changed directions and went back to where he came. A few minutes later, the second man, tried the same thing, and I turned, to let him know I saw him, and the same results as the first time – he turned and walked away. A few minutes later, they were both coming at me – from behind…I simply turned and looked at both of them, and swept back my fishing vest, to reveal a handgun on my hip, in the holster, and they not only decided to be someplace else, they gathered up the female that was with them, and jumped in their Bronco and sped away.

Now, the foregoing is a true story, and when revealed that I was armed, that was the end of what could have been a bad situation. Now, no threat was made, and no words were exchanged – they left and I continued on with my fishing. It could have turned ugly in short order if both of those young men had attacked me at the same time – but they had the good sense to move on. So, that was a situation where the use of deadly force could have been justified. It is called disparity of force, as I was outnumbered and I would have likely lost a fight against them. So, as I said, you have to know when to use deadly force and when not to. A simple attack can turn into a deadly one in the blink of an eye.

A Youthful Entrepreneur

When I was in 6th grade, I sold pepper spray, as a part-time gig. Many of the teachers at my school were buying this pepper spray. It was an effective tool against an attack – and it was not a lethal tool. However, you quickly learn that pepper spray can come back on you, and into your face, in just a mild wind. Today, there are various formulas of pepper spray and other types of spray devices, and some are in heavy oil and some are actually a foam, so it doesn’t tend to spray back into your face – that’s a good thing.

However, I like to keep my attackers at a distance from me, so I have time to react to an attack. And, many pepper-type sprays don’t spray very far. Enter the Pepperball line of less than lethal products, and they all shoot a paintball type of projectile, that has either an inert filling or ones that have powdered OC pepper inside of them. The inert balls do come out at a good velocity and will sure sting anyone who is hit with one – a good deterrent to start with. And, the rest of the balls behind it will be loaded with pepper and burst into a 12-foot diameter upon impact. Recipe of the Week: Mrs. Alaska’s Biscuits and Flour Tortillas

The following recipes were kindly sent by SurvivalBlog reader Mrs. Alaska:

Biscuits and Flour Tortillas with bear fat (or bacon grease, pork lard or butter)

Around the world, virtually every region makes its own delicious version of a flat or risen bread (called a quick bread) that requires NO yeast. Consider Indian dosas, rotis, chapatis, and naan, Vietnamese scallion pancakes, British and American biscuits and scones, French crepes, and Latin American tortillas. The flat breads have the advantage that they can be cooked WITHOUT an oven, on a woodstove, griddle, grill or even on a porous utensil over an open flame. Maybe prudent preppers and campers master a few of their favorite flat breads or quick breads for nearly spontaneous tasty treats.

Notice how similar the ingredients are between the two following recipes. Even if you have never made a fluffy biscuit, you can make a light tortilla.

In advance, I assemble bags of the dry ingredients for speedy biscuits.

Tortillas are even easier: I assemble bags of the formed balls, store 8 at a time in the freezer or fridge, and take out the night before for fresh tortillas in 2 minutes. Yum.

Flour Tortillas

Cook on a dry griddle, over high heat. 30-60 seconds on each side.

Ingredients
  • 2 ½ c flour
  • 1   tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ c fat (butter, bacon grease, bear or pork lard, etc). I do not recommend liquid vegetable oil, but perhaps others have had more favorable experiences. To me, the ingredient made the final product gummy.
  • 7/8 – 1 c HOT liquid (can be milk, broth, or water)

 

Technique:

Form into a ball, folding several times (no need to knead).

Let the dough rest in a plastic bag or covered container for 30 minutes or more.

Form into individual balls. This recipe makes 8 balls about the size of golf balls.

Let the balls rest in the bag or bowl.

Freeze, refrigerate, or use right away. Cook the dough when it is room temperature.

To cook:

Heat the griddle on high. Add NO OIL.

Roll a ball out as thinly as you can. You can cut it round, but who cares if it is in the shape of Australia or Antarctica? It still tastes great.

Slap the tortilla onto the hot griddle.

I position mine on a griddle right over each gas flame.

Flip when you see air bubbles forming on top and brown beneath – just like a pancake. Obviously, the thinner the tortilla, the shorter the cooking time.

NOTE 1: In my experience, butter makes the flakiest tortillas. Bear grease is a very neutral flavor and bacon grease contributes a stronger flavor. Similarly the liquid choice of water or broth. Each is good for different planned uses.

Tortillas are best eaten right away, but can be saved.

 

Biscuits

Bake at 450 degrees for 12-15 minutes

Note: I place parchment paper on my cookie sheet.

 

Ingredients
  • 2 c white flour
  • 1 tsp salt (I use less)
  • 4 tsp baking powder

 

Combine well.

Cut in 4 TBS of cold fat (butter, bacon grease, bear lard, etc)

(Cut in means that you cut the fat into little pieces and then distribute them through the flour with utensils to make those bits smaller still, about the sizes of peas).

Pour in (but not all at once, as you may need less: ¾ c milk

PLUS 1 tsp white vinegar (this will help the biscuits rise more).

Mix lightly.

Technique:

Stir batter, knead ½ minute into a dough, pat or roll about ½ -3/4 inch thick.

Let it rest a few minutes.

Cut into pieces. I cut this recipe into 6 triangles, like a pizza or scone. Who says that biscuits have to be round? That requires another tool and another step of recombining the cut-off dough. No thanks.

SERVING

In my experience, homemade biscuits do not freeze/reheat well. They have a tougher texture. These are best when fresh, light, steamy hot. Enjoy.

First of all, lets take a moment to praise our Lord God for this wonderful world – and for all of bountiful blessings that we have. We need to look no further than what is happening in India to be reminded to get down on our knees and pray. I have personally heard from medical doctors on the ground that talk about how those in the COVID wards – and field hospitals are pulling their O2 masks off to be able to die so that their families will not go bankrupt from the hospital bill. We are awash in blessings – and we must be thankful and grateful to the Lord for them every day.

Our collective old friend Todd Gray, has some serious steel bullet-resistant shutters on his windows – and an armored door on his house. In JWR’s novel Patriots, the benefit of his shutters was beautifully illustrated. Todd and his wife Mary had a true fighting position.

We haven’t reached full Crunch yet. But people domestically here in these U.S. of A. are being terrified regularly by the likes of BLM and (anti)FA.

The ponytailed black-clad jack-booted thug’s favorite modus operandi  seems to be Kristallnacht – the night of the broken glass. Store windows, home windows and car windows…. It must be a good time to own a glass repair business.

The Gray family pulled shut and fastened their shutters when Colonel Cooper called it “full red” during The Crunch.

For those of us who don’t have those shutters or want an intermediatory step – there is a fantastic prep – an invisible prep – it isn’t too expensive – I fortified every window on the ground floor of my house for about 400 dollars – and I have a lot of windows and glass doors.

3M window security film is really really strong. It can be shot through a dozen times and even then, it takes a minute or three to bust through with a full-strength swing of a baseball bat or crowbar. (That’s 10 minutes in soy-powered antifa strength for those wondering the conversion factor).

3M isn’t the only game in town and a few other very good products exist.

The War of the Roses began on May 22, 1455. From History.com’s description: “In the opening battle of England’s War of the Roses, the Yorkists defeat King Henry VI’s Lancastrian forces at St. Albans, 20 miles northwest of London. As I stated in Part I, I favor massive non-compliance at every level possible without landing myself in jail.  This approach calls for the “Gray Man”, “Going Galt”, and true to my heritage, “Irish democracy”.  The important characteristics of such intent is to not organize, to not be heard or seen, and to not seek to massively disrupt the status quo. It’s all underground, under the surface, like small tremors that can’t be attributed to a particular earthquake fault line or dormant volcano.  Think of it, if you will, as undiscovered termites or carpenter ants chomping away on a wooden house.  The wooden house being our severely corrupted government, that without remedy will fail, collapse under the weight of it’s own rottenness.

First, what do I mean by “massive noncompliance”?  I personally do not wish to run afoul of law enforcement or the Internal Revenue Service, so I choose my battles wisely.  Knowing, that law enforcement has not always played fairly (reference Ruby Ridge, Waco, Bundy Ranch, Robert LaVoy Finicum, and so many others).  Neither has the IRS played fairly (reference Becky Gerritson, a founder of the Wetumpka Tea Party in Alabama, and Lois Lerner of the IRS, and so many more).  Don’t get me started on “eminent domain” and “asset forfeiture” and the “Environmental Protection(not!) Agency”, etc.  Many of our federal and state agencies have entirely too much power.  The idea of “innocent until proven guilty”, “due process”, and even the “Bill of Rights” don’t seem to apply anymore.  Or, they do apply, but only for certain people.  For instance, if you are a Mexican cartel member drug running in California, and you get pulled over and arrested by the California Highway Patrol, don’t worry!  The local District Attorney will get you released immediately so you can get back to business.  Why do the Mexican cartels have favored status in California?  I’m asking, for some friends.

I will, of course, always, shoot in self-defense to protect myself, my property, and my family, but I’m not going looking for trouble from any of these entities.  And yes, I realize how that may turn out – another topic for another day.  This article is not calling for an “armed insurrection” as Congress and the Department of Justice(not!) like to refer to any American who owns guns and discusses how to restore the Republic.  After listening to the FIB, oops I mean, FBI Director Christopher Wray testify before Congress, I find our situation humorous, sad, and insane, that we have reached this point.  But we have, and here we are.Continue reading“On Irish Democracy – Part 2, by Born Free”

Editors’ Prepping Progress

To be prepared for a crisis, every Prepper must establish goals and make long-term and short-term plans. In this column, the SurvivalBlog editors review their week’s prep activities and planned prep activities for the coming week. Jim Reports:

This past week I had to re-establish an electric fence hot wire. Our bovine delinquents — especially our bull — have been disrespecting our fences too much. So the electric fence now goes entirely around the perimeter of our ranch. That required adding more than 500 insulators. Since some fir saplings had grown up and some cedar limbs had dropped down to touch the hot wire’s position, it also meant doing a lot of chainsawing and pruning. It was quite a chore!

We’ve had a larger number of Canada Geese come visit our pastures this spring. Not only are they messy, but they also graze prodigiously.  So, nearly every morning I have to hop on an ATV, and chase them off. I don’t go full Clint Eastwood (no swearing!), but close to it. Get off my lawn!
