Real World EMP Effects on Motor Vehicles, by Michael Z. Williamson

I distilled the following from another forum: See the EMPCommission.org links. The auto testing results are on page 112 of that report. They tested a sample of 37 cars. Here is a summary of the results: Most cars will not even stall. In a test, where cars were subjected to EMP conditions, they tested both with cars turned ON, and cars turned OFF. I quote “No effects were subsequently observed in those automobiles that were not turned on during EMP exposure.” NO EFFECTS FOR CARS THAT WERE TURNED OFF during the EMP, they just started right up. EMP effects on cars that are running: “The most serious effect observed on running automobiles was that the motors in three cars stopped at field strengths of approximately 30 kV/m or above. In an actual EMP exposure, these vehicles would glide to a stop and require the driver to restart them.” In other…

…help of the installers. If your ground is not properly connected, you are starting out in a hole and will probably loose the device. Cars are designed to operate in noisy environments. Even though there is significant wire that interconnects the small computers, they have relatively decent grounding, shielding, and rf/emp spike protection. It all depends on how close the electronic device is to the source of the EMP, how much antenna the device presents to the EMP spike, and how well protected the device is from an EMP spike. Military-grade electronics will generally be hardened because they are expected to be targets. Consumer devices will display varying levels of protection, depending on how they are installed and any added protection given to them. The bottom line: You don’t know how close to the EMP spike you will be, so if you absolutely need survivablilty in your electronics, you have…

Scot’s Product Review: MobileSec Cellphone Blocker and Laptop EMP Shielding

…you. Paging traffic can, however, be monitored, and if you get a message to call a number of interest, your pager could be associated with your phone number when you return the call. It might be smart to organize a simple code system for your associates. The Laptop EMP Shielding bag is for a different problem– protecting your computer from an EMP event while allowing you to use it. It allows WiFi and things like cordless mice to connect. The signal to and from those is degraded, but they will work if close enough. This bag uses a larger mesh screen than the cellphone phone one, so it isn’t attenuating as high a signal as the cell phone bags. Since you are only looking through one layer of a coarser mesh, it is fairly easy to read the screen. Hitting the keys is not a problem. The touchpad worked okay…

Solar Storms, EMPs, Nukes, and Cyberattacks – Part 2 by Pulse Prepper

Part 2: Electromagnetic Pulse Weapons (EMPs) and Nukes How EMPs affect the power grid An Electromatic Pulse (EMP) can be natural, such as a lightning strike or a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME), which are both forms of an EMP. However, here we will discuss a man-made EMP, which is accomplished by exploding a nuclear bomb at a high altitude. A nuclear bomb exploded at ground level (or an air burst a few hundred feet from the surface) causes extensive damage within a certain radius. However, the damage is limited to a specific area. The blast radius of the nuclear bomb dropped on Hiroshima, Japan in 1945 was approximately 1.7 to three miles, resulting in extensive loss of life and property damage. However, outside the blast radius, the main concern is radiation poisoning and its near and long-term effects. An EMP, however, in addition to causing loss of life and property…

Nuclear War Won’t Be Like Hollywood Portrays It- Part 3, by 3ADscout

…action. The real question in a Counterforce strike equation is whether the President would launch he Minuteman ICBMs on warning or not. The NORAD Attack Assessment Staff would be in hyperdrive trying to analyze the incoming attack, and provide options to STRATCOM and the President. If the incoming strike is aimed at Minuteman silos, the President either uses them or loses them. And the Russian attack sub force would be tasked with taking out the 2-4 SSBNs at sea. OneGuy Will any intelligent enemy use an EMP attack before a full scale nuclear attack? Of course not. You might as well tweet that you are planning on attacking them. An EMP device IS a nuclear attack and will be responded to as such. Except for terrorists/terrorism an EMP is strategically useless or worse. EMP is simply the latest buzzword or scare word. It is a terrible weapon and a ludicrous…
