October 14, 1834: In Philadelphia, Whigs and Democrats staged a gun, stone, and brick battle for control of a Moyamensing Township election, resulting in one death, several injuries, and the burning of a block of buildings.

On October 14,1899, Morning Post reporter Winston Churchill departed to South Africa, toting a Broomhandle Mauser pistol. His goal was to report on the Second Boer War. He was later taken prisoner of war, but escaped. He recounted his exploits in an autobiography titled My Early Life.

The Cuban Missile Crisis began on October 14, 1962, bringing the United States and the Soviet Union to the brink of nuclear conflict. Photographs were taken by a high-altitude U-2 spy plane and offered incontrovertible evidence that Soviet-made medium-range missiles were in Cuba. These missiles were capable of carrying nuclear warheads and were stationed 90 miles off the American coastline.

Rebuilding an Old Vehicle as a Daily Driver – Part 1, by Lodge Pole

In 1975, for the first time in his life, my grandfather, who was a Great Depression era child, splurged and ordered a brand-new vehicle from the factory. It was a 1976 Chevrolet Silverado K20 4×4. (Aside from the color, it looks a lot like the one pictured above.) This piece of machinery was his pride and joy until the day he passed away. Shortly after he picked it up from the dealership, he had a dump bed installed. He wanted it to look stock, and still have the usefulness and functionality of a standard bed, so he hired a fabricator to design, build and install the hydraulic lift, then re-installed the factory bed. Simply looking at the truck, you would never know it had been altered. One of my grandfather’s favorite past times was going to the gas station to fill up. He would lift the bed up to access the saddle tanks, and within a few seconds, he had an audience observing his truck.

The dump bed feature was extremely handy when hauling lumber, cutting firewood, which he loved to do, or developing his little ranch in the mountains. He built his home in the using this truck, bringing lumber from the yard he owned, and going down to the river and picking out rocks and boulders to build a forty-foot-tall chimney with. Recipe of the Week:

Reader K.N. sent us her recipes for Black Bean Brownies and White Bean Blond Brownies. She writes:

“I use:

1 box dark chocolate brownie mix, 1 can low-sodium black beans, rinsed, drained, pureed/creamed til smooth.

Add 1 small egg, 1/3 cup of any oil, 1/3 cup water, dash of vanilla. Pour mix into greased baking pan.
Bake for 20-25 minutes at 350 Degrees. Let cool completely before cutting into squares.
If adventurous, substitute a spoonful of peanut butter for the oil, or add some crushed peppermint candy cane.

You can use a variation of this recipe to also make Blond Brownies or “Blondies”:

1 box carrot cake mix, 1 can low sodium small white beans, rinsed, drained, pureed.
Follow same recipe as above, but substitute almond flavoring for vanilla.
If adventurous, substitute grated carrot, raisins, chopped walnuts instead of oil/water.
The nice thing about the brownies is you won’t bloat up or have gas.”

Parkerizing at Home – Part 2, by S.A.

Most of the time the barreled receiver is treated as one part. Normally, a rifle barrel is not removed from the receiver during parkerizing since it is difficult to remove and reinstall without damaging the new finish. In these cases it is not uncommon for issues caused by trapped solution to show up sometime in the future where the barrel shoulder meets the receiver face.

One way to mitigate issues caused by trapped solution is to use compressed air after the part comes out of the parkerizing solution but before the final rinse to try to force out any remaining solution. This of course will result in a potentially dangerous spray of the solution into the air. After the water displacing oil step again use compressed air to further force oil into any crevices and hopefully displace any remaining solution.Continue reading“Parkerizing at Home – Part 2, by S.A.”
