JWR’s Recommendations of the Week:

Here are JWR’s Recommendations of the Week for various media and tools of interest to SurvivalBlog readers. The focus is usually on emergency communications gear, bug out bag gear, books and movies that have any tie-in to disaster preparedness, and links to “how to” self-sufficiency videos. There are also links to sources for both storage food as and food storage containers. You will also note an emphasis on history books and historical movies. This week the focus is on Milwaukee brand cordless chainsaws. (See the Gear & Grub section.)

Dr. Bones Nurse Amy: Boiling Water To Make It Safe To Drink: Disinfection, Filters and Fire. “Many sources of water, even sometimes from a tap, are contaminated and unsafe to drink. Using filters and boiling water will go a long way towards making the water safer to consume. Boiling will not remove certain toxins nor kill all pathogens. Of interest to those who own metal detectors: Unexpected Discovery Forces Treasure Hunter to Question Everything He Knows. JWR’s Comment: My guess is that with that many discarded broken shoe buckles, the scissors, the hammer head and the thimble, the original owner of the property was a cobbler. It bears mention that the hammer head he found was the right size for cobbling work. Take a look at his other videos. It is nice to see that he packs a Glock, when he’s out in the woods. And there is more than just metal detecting in his videos. He often points out the wild edibles that he finds.

Overall, it is entertaining to think about, from a survival aspect.” Warning: This audio drama podcast is not for kids. There is some foul language and there are some suggestive situations.

Dr. M. wrote:

“I want to bring your attention to the Milwaukee brand cordless chainsaw. I was turned onto this by a contractor providing remodeling services on my home.  Although I don’t own one personally, he informed me that he can cut for over two hours on a battery charge. It is significantly quieter than a gasoline operated saw and could likely be recharged with a solar panel, TEG module, or generator.  I imagine this could be helpful if fuel was scarce.
Interestingly, I encountered a blogger online who paired a cordless Makita chainsaw with an inverter and a series of batteries in the back of his pick up truck. He was able to recharge the batteries using his alternator, and do a significant amount of wood cutting using the battery bank.
Just a few interesting ideas, although I like the thought of a dedicated Milwaukee cordless chainsaw the best.”

JWR Adds: I’d recommend getting at least three spare 9-amp batteries on hand, to keep on hand, charged. Oh, and a half-dozen spare chains.

Rucksack Rob sent this:

“Here’s a recommendation for adding to a perennial garden…

Homesteader Onions (aka: Egyptian Walking Onions)
They are cold hardy (even in the Northern Great Lakes) but be advised, these can overtake a garden fairly easy over a period of a year or three. I keep mine in a 8×8 raised bed…by themselves.
One of the best things about Homesteader Onions is, after they are established, there are always plenty to thin out and pass on to family and friends. They are available for Sept/Oct shipping for fall planting.”
