“The consolidation of the states into one vast republic, sure to be aggressive abroad and despotic at home, will be the certain precursor of ruin which has overwhelmed all that preceded it.” – Robert E. Lee

Re. Lee’s quote. It is an awesome quote from an awesome American. Can I make one minor correction? In his letter of December 15, 1866 to Lord Acton, General Lee used the word ‘republic’ and not ’empire’.

That “one vast republic” became the bulwark of freedom in the 20th century. Those individual states would not have defeated the Nazis or landed a man on the moon.
“That “one vast republic” became the bulwark of freedom in the 20th century.”
Would that be the same “bulwark of freedom” that backed the brutal fascist dictator of Chile Augusto Pinochet and the coup d’etat that installed him?
Would that also be that same “bulwark of freedom” that backed the brutal fascist dictator of Cuba Fulgencio Batista, leading to the rise of the brutal communist dictator Fidel Castro?
Or would that be the same “bulwark of freedom” that not only backed but staged the coup d’etat that installed the brutal fascist dictator, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the Shah of Iran?
Or maybe it was that “bulwark of freedom” that backed the brutal fascist dictator Saddam Hussein or for that matter Osama bin Laden of Al-Qaeda infamy.
Or maybe it is that “bulwark of freedom” that has been doing everything possible to thwart the Constitution of the United States, the actual “bulwark of freedom”. Meaning the government actions that are leading to the destruction of freedom in the good old USA.
“Those individual states would not have defeated the Nazis or landed a man on the moon.”
That confederation of states would not have had to defeat the Nazis, as:
1. It was never our fight in the first place.
2. Had we not intervened in the first European war 1914-1818, there would not have been room for Nazis. That war, too, was not our fight. The Nazis would have been a minor nuisance to the German republic instead of running it. Thank you Woodrow Wilson, NOT!!
3. The intervention in WW1 has lead to the myriad of interventions that have be happening year after year, decade after decade, ever since. That would be America’s forever wars.
As for NASA, maybe that should have been left up to private enterprise, instead of the corporatist MIC, the military, industrial, congressional, complex. NASA is and has always been a part of the US Air Force.
So thank you Teddy Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson and Franklin Roosevelt and Harry Truman and Lyndon Johnson and George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton and George W. Bush and Barrack Obama for your backing of our “bulwark of freedom” and America’s forever wars. We’ll see if DJ Trump eventually gets added to this list or not.
I could continue my rant, but I think I’ve made a valid point.
Marse Robert and you are both correct.
