Lubing the AK
The method and lubricant describe in the article is good for warmer climates, but grease in cold weather can greatly slow down the action and decrease the reliability. The AK is ‘over gassed’ for a good reason. In cold weather use a multi-weight motor oil. In extreme cold weather use a 5-20w, and wipe off all excess oil and run it ‘dry’. It is not actually dry, it has a very thin layer that still lubricates. A full synthetic is best, because it has the lowest ‘pour point’ in extreme cold weather, much lower than conventional petroleum based lubricants. If someone is lazy and fails to wipe the BCG, rails, and every part of the action dry, then this best to have around.
Although I was never in the military or played in a sand box, I am a mechanic of many sorts, and live where it can get to -40F. It is a different world at those temperatures, and where the AK can still be reliable, and when the AR is not. I would not expect the AR to be reliable at those temperatures. It needs plenty of lubrication, and does not work without it. The oils get very gummy and sticky at those temps, and even become solid. Even the Army does not have a good solution for this problem.
