Today we present the first column from SurvivalBlog’s new Field Gear Editor, Pat Cascio. Many of you will recognize his name from the various gun and knife magazines where he has written for more than 18 years. He has written for monthly issues of American Survival Guide, Handguns, Gun World, American Handgunner, as well as for annuals produced by Guns, American Handgunner, and Guns & Ammo. Notes from JWR:

Today (Friday, March 4th, 2011) is Book Bomb Day for the new book Surviving Off Off-Grid: Decolonizing the Industrial Mind. It was written by Michael Bunker, a Plain (Amish-associated) man that lives at a Christian Agrarian community in Texas. I haven’t yet read the book, but according to the reviews, he has a wealth of knowledge about living without electricity. (I heard about the book release event at the last minute, which places me at a disadvantage.) One reviewer described the author: “Michael Bunker is a colourful character. He’s like John Wayne, John Calvin, Grizzly Adams and Thomas Cromwell rolled …

Notes from JWR:

I just heard from my publisher that “Survivors” (the first of two sequels to my novel “Patriots: A Novel of Survival in the Coming Collapse”) will have its first press run in a hardback binding, followed by a trade paperback, and then possibly a mass market paperback. The books will be published by the Atria and Pocket Books divisions of Simon & Schuster. “Survivors” is now in the final stages of editing, and I’m meanwhile busy writing the second sequel, which is tentatively titled “Citizens”. As I’ve mentioned before, the sequels will be geographically distinct but contemporaneous with “Patriots”. We …
