Notes from Avalanche Lily:

Jenny of The Last Frontier blog, who was tragically widowed in 2012 is now Seeking a Husband. Her blog post echoes the theme of what Jim’s late wife Linda (“The Memsahib”) selflessly wrote on her deathbed, in 2009. (See: From The Memsahib: On My Bucket List–Looking for a Wife.) Jenny is a friend of mine. We recently had an unexpected and providential meeting, and have become fast friends. Both Jim and I were widowed, and we were brought together by God’s providence. We’re praying that Jenny finds a new husband, in a similar way. Do you know any single God-fearing …

August 5th is the sad 64th anniversary of the Mann Gulch Fire in Montana that took the lives of 13 firefighters (including 12 smokejumpers and one former smokejumper), in 1949. The intense, fast-moving forest fire was in what later became Gates of the Mountains Wilderness. The events of that fire were chronicled in the book Young Men and Fire by Norman Maclean and immortalized in the haunting lyrics of the ballad Cold Missouri Waters by James Keelaghan. This anniversary of course reminds us of the recent Yarnell Hill fire in Arizona, where 19 hotshots died. Please keep their family members …

August 2nd is the anniversary of the death of my great-great-great uncle, William B. Weaver. He was a deputy sheriff who was shot and killed in the mining town of Tuscarora, Nevada, in 1880. An audiobook and various e-book formats will soon be produced. Everything is on track for the October 1st release date. All of the …

August 1st is celebrated annually as Swiss Independence Day, in recognition of the signing of the Federal Charter of 1291, which united Switzerland’s first three cantons. As of 2013, Switzerland has been free and independent for 722 years. (Our Republic is just a wee fledgling, by comparison.) Having a well-armed populace has assured those seven centuries of freedom for Confederatio Helvetica. Today at the Rawles Ranch we plan to do some target shooting with our Schmidt-Rubin rifles and our SIG PE57, to celebrate. — The clock is now ticking for residents of Maryland. They have until September 30, 2013 to …

Notes from JWR:

This is the birthday of Samuel Whittemore (born, July 27, 1694 – died February 3, 1793.) He was an English-born colonial American farmer and soldier. He was eighty years old when he became the oldest known colonial combatant in the American War of Independence. Take a few minutes to read his biographical sketch. It sounds almost too astounding even for Hollywood to invent. By the way, I recommend that in a few years Clint Eastwood ought to portray Whittemore. I believe that would be a fitting way for Clint to cap his acting career, and a great way for Americans …
