Letter Re: Books For Home Schoolers

I saw your list of recommended reading for young people, especially those being educated at home by their parents. I would like to add my own list. Anything by Stephen W. Meader (1892-1977). Meader published 44 novels in his lifetime. The subjects range from entrepreneurial to adventure to American history. The grammar, vocabulary, and storytelling qualities are first rate. His books are set during difficult times, including the American Revolution, the westward expansion, the War Between the States, and the Great Depression. Characters are mostly young men trying to make a living through common sense, hard work, and persistence. Most …

Late teens and older This is the second installment in the Ankara Fever series, which appears to be scheduled as a trilogy. After reading book two, I’m really looking forward to book three! The first book– Ankara Fever: Journeys– was about Roger Westover trying to get himself, his new girlfriend, and his son to safety at a bug-out location. In book two– Ankara Fever: Homecomings– we get to see what is happening at the bug-out location. …

Book Review: Journal Of A Deserter

Author: Jacob Maccabee Copyright Date: 2014 Publisher: Xlibris LLC ISBN: 978-1-4931-5760-0 Amazon Link: Journal of a Deserter Audio, e-book or foreign translation available: No Suitable for children: No This is more a story of recovery than one of preparedness, but it does spend a bit of time on wilderness survival skills, and I expect many in the SurvivalBlog audience will appreciate the struggle. Besides that, depending on how the SHTF and what any given individual may experience, the recovery may need to be part of one’s life in the aftermath. It should also be noted that while not an autobiography, …

Book Review: The End of the Age

Book Title: The End of the Age Author: Pat Robertson Copyright Date: 1995 Publisher: Word Publishing ISBN: 0-8499-1290-3 Amazon Link: The End of the Age Audio, e-book or foreign translation available: Audio and Kindle available Suitable for children; probably okay for Jr. High and up. This book was personally handed to me with a “You should read this” admonition, which came from someone who knows me well and whose advice I respect. A cursory scan showed that it had promise, so into the queue it went. I will tell you now that no sooner had I finished this book than …

Book Review: Fury of the Fifth Angel

Book Title: Fury of the Fifth Angel Author: Pat & Chris Hoffman Copyright Date: 2013 Publisher: Dog Ear Publishing ISBN: 978-1-4575-2429-5 Amazon Link: Fury of the Fifth Angel Audio, e-book or foreign translation available: Kindle available Suitable for children: No. I had just finished reading The End of the Age when Fury of the Fifth Angel arrived in my mailbox. I hadn’t even gotten started on writing my review of “The End of the Age”. Given the title and the subject matter, I knew I was going to have to bump Fury of the Fifth Angel up to the top …

Comparison of The End of the Age and Fury of the Fifth Angel

SPOILERS AHEAD I could not help but compare the two of these in my mind as I read Fury of the Fifth Angel, and I believe there is value in this, so here are my thoughts having read them both back to back. The End of the Age does a better job of laying out the progression from one disaster to the next, explaining how each one sets the stage for the next one, much like falling dominoes. The argument is made even more compelling by its direct correlation to prophecy, particularly given the lack of scientific knowledge available to …

Harry’s Book Review: Emotional Intelligence

Book Title: Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ Author: Daniel Goleman Copyright Date: 1995 Publisher: Bantam ISBN: 978-0553383713 Audio, e-book or foreign translation available:  Audio and Kindle available Suitable for children: No.  Reads much like a college text book.  Not quite as dry, but not a book for a child. Let me open with the qualifier that this book does not match the normal criteria for the books I typically review for SurvivalBlog.  I sincerely doubt Daniel Goleman ever had this audience in mind.  However, I think many in this audience would be well served by reading …
