Here are JWR’s Recommendations of the Week for various media and tools of interest to SurvivalBlog readers. The focus is usually on emergency communications gear, bug out bag gear, books and movies–often with a tie-in to disaster preparedness, and links to “how to” self-sufficiency videos. There are also links to sources for both storage food and storage containers. You will also note an emphasis on history books and historical movies. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. This week the focus is on Wuhan Virus prepping. (See the Instructional Videos section and the Gear & Grub section.)

Counterpart, Season 2. Available for free streaming, for those with Amazon Prime. In many ways, this binge-worthy season was better than Season 1. This season seemed less preoccupied with sex. There was quite a bit of character development, and it fully answered two of the key questions that had been left dangling: 1.) How was the interdimensional portal created/discovered? and, 2.) Who is “Management”?

Blogs:
6.5 millimeter rifles are presently all the rage, but their history dates back 126 years. I found this, over at The Big Game Hunting Blog: .260 Remington vs 6.5 Creedmoor vs 6.5×55 Swede: Choosing The Best 6.5. One key factor that the author doesn’t mention is barrel life. With that factor in mind, the 6.5 x 55 is clearly the best for longevity. And of course, with the 6.5 x 55, if you shop around, you can find a 6.5 x55 rifle that was made prior to 1899, so you can buy it with no paperwork, in most states. (I happen to have several antique Swedes for sale, over at Elk Creek Company.) If you handload, you can get some phenomenal accuracy out of the 6.5 x55, by virtue of compatibility with the wide range of very low-drag bullets that have been recently developed for loading the 6.5 Creedmoor.

Could you use the O2 generator in conjunction with a small air compressor to bottle O2 for use w an acetylene/ propane torch?
As a ‘practitioner’ of the old fashion American ‘can-do-spirit’, it is feasible. An off the shelf method might be the compressors used to recharge diving tanks. The trick might be building up a reservoir of air that has a very high concentration of oxygen that would be effective as a treatment. The contents of a large oxygen tent might do. How that would be measured as mixture in the diving tank could be the problem. Playing with pure oxygen is very dangerous. Been there, done that. Compressed air that has been enhanced with pure oxygen would produce a very different burn rate, a rough indicator that could be used gauge the oxygen content. Yet there are better ways. The main difference between medical grade oxygen, and oxygen used for welding is that there can be a trace of petroleum oil in the oxygen gas. However, if you are a certified welder or have a friend, that is a far better and cost effect source than rigging up one’s own production plant. A small tank might last up to 3 days of constant use. A large tank, certainly much longer, yet when it is gone, it is gone.
6L/m oxygen concentrators on Amazon are just over $200.00. I would get replacement filters and supplies to keep it running if you can afford it. 4L of oxygen per minute is not an uncommon requirement for patients in ICU. Been there, done that at least 3 times. Would I use any oxygen source available in an austere environment to keep a loved one alive? You bet. IMTUO (In My Totally Unqualified Opinion) oxygen for a patient who might otherwise develop congestive heart failure without it, is irreplaceable and critical medicine that would give the antibiotics a chance to eradicate the bacterial infection, or could prolong life until modern medicine would be available. My concentrator is hospital grade, worth at the time around $800.00 used. These Amazon units are dirt cheap in comparison and there is no substitute, except lots of large oxygen tanks that require no power, and have few moving parts.
Don’t know that I’ve ever purchased a can of “meat (beef)” at the grocery store but doesn’t $10.75 for a 14.5 oz can seem awfully high? Maybe not… but guess I’ll be sticking with my other white meat (Spam). 🙂
I found that the least expensive canned meat available on the internet is around $4 to $5.00, not including shipping.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B59QBBW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 $6.28 for 28 Oz of ground beef, fully cooked…. used these for quite some time and can recommend. The canned beef (slices) have gone up in price recently but can be found for the same price as ground beef if you watch for it .. https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B59QBE4/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Even at the maximum rate of 5L, that’s a long, long way from bottled O2 gas concentrations
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B59QDEC/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Ground beef at less than half the price
Same in a 28oz can for even less per/oz cost:
https://www.walmart.com/ip/Keystone-Ground-Beef-28-oz/23636965
The trouble is getting and paying for a large supply of bottled oxygen. I also have a small bottle that might last 3 days in reduced and metered use. Much less if un-metered. I also have a concentrator. The bottle can be used to assist for a short time of up to 3 days. So I have the best of both worlds. However, I do have friends down at the parts store, and I know how to weld….
Anyone know the shelf life of Spam? My insistence on buying my blood pressure medication in 1000 dose quantities has suddenly begun to make sense to my friends and pharmacist.
10 ounce can of beef in gravy at the local grocery in San Antonio is under $3…
This article makes a number of good points often posted to the Survival Blog… Although preppers aren’t waiting for the help of the government, many many people believe the government will swoop in to save them. They lack critical thinking skills, and the ability to face risk and danger head-on, and haven’t even learned from prior events (recall Hurricane Katrina as just one example).

From the conclusion: “People who adopt the attitude that they are a victim following a real disaster and then simply wait for the government to arrive to set things straight are making a huge mistake and are risking the kiss of death.”
Alex Jones has his ‘experts’ who have given the best early, and correct conclusions about the virus for the last two weeks. On today’s show he had reoccurring guests Dr Francis Boyle, and Mike Adams back on to discuss the virus. Start at the 2nd hour mark.

In another video Mike Adams makes the case for his best strategy to avoid infection, boosting the immune system, as he concludes correctly that most will at some point, come into contact with the virus, as few are able to fully isolate themselves. I cannot disagree, however, as a senior without the necessary funds to purchase these expensive immune boosting nutrients at this time, who typical for this stage in life, also has a compromised immune system, and risk factors that portend a poor ability to survive an infection by this virus, self quarantine is my best option. I will attempt to avoid it to buy time to allows the virus to ‘burn’ through the population, and mutate into a less virulent form. I would also strive to boost the immune system, and use anti-viral supplements as he recommends, as I might afford, but would also prepare to fight the disease with antibiotics, oxygen, and the ‘kitchen sink’. Living in a lightly populated region, and have no need to contact others, or do business to ‘keep the lights on’, for a few like myself, this is a realistic strategy. However, if the financial system collapses, and a worse case scenario ensues, contact with others for the purposes defense will create the necessity of working closely with those who are infected.
Sign up for the Mike Adam’s newsletter, and when his videos becomes available, you’ll get an email. He is exploring some anti-viral options, and suggests others.

NO, DO NOT try to compress oxygen with a standard air compressor. Lube oil plus hot O2 at high pressure= explosion
I know you’re right. I hadn’t thought of that. Thanks!
The O2 always seems to be the limiting factor for welding/cutting any grid down situation…..,
Doublemountainman, if you have electricity (we are of-grid solar), look into “Water welder”
The Fed pumped 40.6 billion into the market last night ,trying to stop the downturn from the crash in the making from the virus killing China’s economy
Bezos sold 900 thousand shares of Amazon on Monday ,
As did a company I’m part of. I’m not permitted by law to say more ,(insider trading laws )
If you must have something that’s made in China. You best be buying it ,
Think about summer building projects too. So much of the basic hardware like deck screws and nails these days comes from China. Stock up while you can if you’re going to be using it anyway.
Thanks for that. With the virus headed our way, those not in any stage of denial, might be focused on preparing for that threat. Life as we know it may only last another few months, who knows. The financial system is fragile. How debit will be serviced when the of last of the supply from China ceases, and during a time the people will be panicking to protect themselves from the virus. There is now more reason to believe that it is a bio weapon, and that it may be air borne. This is very bad stuff. The Chinese were not fogging the streets of massive cities for no reason, but because it is extremely contagious, such as is measles that has a R0 of 15 to 18. It is in the air and can float around for days. This is level 4 stuff. That is my gut assessment, and that is why self quarantine in sparely populated regions is the best protection. Locking oneself up in a big city apartment or home, would be risky.
I am attempting to remain conservative in my estimates, but I gotta call it as I see it, otherwise I might have blood on my hands. Better be called a fear monger by men, than face judgement. And now I am hearing that Trump is finally taking off the gloves for real, and will purge the traitors. I hope this is true. This itself could cause markets to crash, but we gotta do it.
We are certainly in interesting times. I would be preparing for whatever scenario motivates you, and do it with ‘both hands’. And civil war is also in the mix. All opponents, the Chinese, and our traitors within, will be attempting to leverage all these potential crisis to their advantage.
This is a terrible possibility… Even Maria Bartiromo on Fox Business was asking about the fact that China sent a delegation to the White House without disclosing the virus (although they must have been aware of it), and sent a delegation as well to Davos. She raised the questions with Pete Navarro and the again on Tucker Carlson’s show.
From the ZH article linked below:
“Chinese efforts to stop the full story about what’s going on are because they want the scales to be even since they’re now facing a severe pandemic and depopulation event. No facts point against this conclusion.”

Spotted that sale of Amazon shares in the news… Hmmm.
Hutch and Tom S. You’re referring to Keystone meats in a can. I buy it all the time. It is excellent. And price is great compared to others.
For flu prevention, my holistic doc recommends a few drops of colloidal silver in 6-8 TBS of salted water to be used in a neti pot–which I love. Some folks gargle with a similar solution when a sore throat appears.
He suggested I use the silver in the neti pot right before sleep, thus to allow the silver and salt to rest and work in the tissues. YMMV.
Books, in anticipation of spring: Fruitful Labor…The Ecology, Economy, and practice of a Family Farm by Mike Madison. Then there is this one: Farming for the Long Haul…Resilience and the Lost Art of Agricultural Inventiveness by Michal Foley.
Each book has its own strengths.
Carry on
I have to agree with John L. DO NOT TRY AND COMPRESS OXYGEN WITH A STANDARD COMPRESSOR. I have seen a regulator that had a few drops of oil put in it as an experiment. It exploded. If you want to cut metal without oxygen get set up with a plasma cutter, it does use some power but they are amazing in that they do not heat the material much and the cuts are very narrow and precise. They do require compressed air , but not a lot. I recommend that you buy a lot of the expendables as there is defiantly a learning curve initially and you will mess up a lot of the small tip parts at first.
The Keystone meat is available on Amazon for $4.99 and up. Walmart online was more and out of most. Got some of the aluminum foil sheets for cheap in the large 500 boxes. Very cost efficient and space saving.
I have read that quinine was used to reduce (malarial) fevers in olden times, would laying in a supply of tonic water work, even tho the amounts of quinine would be tiny?
Once a Marine,
Thanks for the tip about the colloidal Silver. I’m awaiting my order right now.
I bought one of those Navage nasal systems. I love it!! The only bad thing is it uses cartridges of sterile salt solution in it but I’m going to try it with a couple drops of the Silver in it
Simper Fi,
(Son, Daughter, bother and Dad all USMC)
Just wondering,
Would the cans of portable oxygen be something to consider until one could save up for the more expensive oxygen concentrator?
Any opinions on this would be much appreciated!
Thank you
Hydrogen peroxide is cheap and very effective in killing germs, even better than bleach and much less offensive. Since I am immuno-compromised, I buy a couple bottles of hydrogen peroxide every week. I also pick up a bottle of rubbing alcohol for sanitizing surfaces in bathrooms, doorknobs, etc. Every year or two I pick up a large bottle of concentrated Dawn dishwashing liquid at Costco. I make my own housecleaning products because I use so much, it just makes financial since to refill bottles myself. For a standard sized spray bottle, 1T Dawn, 1 ounce of rubbing alcohol, fill with water. Because I love lemon scent, I add some lemon juice and a few drops of lemon essential oil, but neither are necessary. I use this for standard bathroom cleaning. I use the hydrogen peroxide to clean my cpap gear, toothbrush, any personal items that touch my mouth, ears, nose (entry points for germs). I wash my hands a gazillion times a day, so I dilute Dawn and add olive oil to the hand soap dispenser. I discovered that some of the best moisturizing beauty products have *mineral oil* as the primary ingredient. All those expensive moisturizers… mineral oil. I’m going to purchase a gallon. My winter skin is a problem and cracked skin is another entry point for germs. Vaseline, also a petroleum product, is an excellent barrier and moisturizer. All this to say, the various flu’s going around are concerning, so I’m in avoidance mode, and glad to have inexpensive germ killers on hand. Glad I was already stocked up on masks and gloves since I noticed they sold out on Amazon, or the asking price was through the roof. I decided to not travel this year (at least not outside of Idaho) – let all the various bugs work their way through the cities, airplanes, etc. Here’s a website that tracks statistics and news on the Coronavirus:
https://covid19info.live/
One thing that is concerning me… if there was a pandemic… do I sacrifice myself (yes) to save the lives of my family members if they need to Get Out Of Dodge and come here. Had to have that internal conversation.
