Here are the latest news items and commentary on current economics news, market trends, stocks, investing opportunities, and the precious metals markets. We also cover hedges, derivatives, and obscura. And it bears mention that most of these items are from the “tangibles heavy” contrarian perspective of JWR. (SurvivalBlog’s Founder and Senior Editor.) Today’s focus is on antique scientific and medical instruments. (See the Tangibles Investing section.)

Tangibles Investing (Antique Scientific and Medical Instruments):
One fairly obscure but profitable niche of tangibles investing is antique scientific and medical instruments. And one of the best web sites covering this niche is Fleaglass.com.

A great site that illustrates some antique scientific and medical Instruments to watch for is Van Leest Antiques, in Utrecht, Holland. Another is M.S. Rau Antiques, in New Orleans, Louisiana.

And of course there is always eBay. It is obvious to look for antique scientific and medical instruments at thrift stores, estate sales, and consignment antique stores, and then re-sell them on eBay. But you can also look for them on eBay listed in the wrong categories or those given incorrect descriptions, and then simply resell them with correct descriptions in the correct category. There is money to be made, that way! One example that was mentioned in a recent SurvivalBlog feature article about being a reseller: An antique surgeon’s bone saw was unknowingly titled/described as a “small carpenter’s saw.”

News Tips:
Please send your economics and investing news tips to JWR. (Either via e-mail of via our Contact form.) These are often especially relevant, because they come from folks who particularly watch individual markets. And due to their diligence and focus, we benefit from fresh “on target” investing news. We often get the scoop on economic and investing news that is probably ignored (or reported late) by mainstream American news outlets. Thanks!
One caveat regarding investing in scientific and medical instruments. There have been a huge number of reproductions (fakes) of these types of items lately, made from brass, likely in India. Most of them look really good to the casual eye. If you are going to buy, then buy from a trusted source.
