I had to delete a product suggestion from yesterday’s Recommendations of the Week column, post facto. The link was to an Internet vendor that sells DAK canned hams, in pairs. When I created that link about six days ago, they were priced at $8.50 per pair. But as of Wednesday, they had jumped to $37 per pair. So it seems that my warning of an imminent price increase was correct! If you can find any cannd hams at under $6 per pound, locally, I suggest that you jump on them, muy pronto.

Shelf stable sealed in plastic, and 100% made by God fearing Americans in Tennessee from Tennessee hogs using Tennessee hickory wood.
And its some pretty da*#@ed good $#&*, too!
I’ve driven by the place, its a hole-in-the-wall. World renowned for quality. AND IT’S SHELF STABLE!!
Those are some good looking hams. We used to have a small country ham producer nearby that made some amazing hams, almost as good as what my grandparents used to smoke, but the man who started the company died, and his children shut it down.
A friend moved here to NC from Washington several years back, and he mailed a whole country ham to his family in Washington as a Christmas present because they had never tried it. When he saw them again, he asked them how they liked the ham, and they told him “we had to throw it out, it had some mold on it” He told me he just about cried when he told them that was normal, that you just cut or wash the mold off. He didn’t send them any more ham though…
Years ago, we lived a few miles from Bentons. We could see Mr. Benton’s house from our home. He gently teased me once about my ‘northern’ accent and even correctly guessed what state I was from!!!!
Their products are delicious. Many of the area chefs advertise that they use Benton’s ham or bacon in their cooking, knowing that that is a draw. I highly recommend their products.
You are right, K. Their building is nothing to look at and the inside is no better. They concentrate their time and talent on makin’ bacon. It is the best.
Because I have yet to find a church in this area that I would attend, I gave Pastor Douglas Wilson a look. This is the most recent of his blog posts from yesterday. I believe he hit the nail on the head, and dispenses good advice here. He urges Christians to leave the big cities. There is ample Bible quoted.

Hams. I find it very curious that many factory farms have culled their pork in huge numbers. Our friends in China have an insatiable appetite for pork, and also have a giant financial/ownership interest in pork production. The bottleneck is, or was, in the packing plants with sick employees. Did the export price of pork go up as well ? Is China taking a financial hit with their investments in the pork industry ?
I haven’t been able to find canned ham in the stores here (Detroit suburb) for years. The only problem I ever had with eating canned ham was the extremely high salt content.
Well now I feel pretty good bout buying those canned hams off the shelf in January.
Wow that’s high
