Reader R.T. had this response to my recent article titled Tools For The Next Generation:

“I’ve used 5% vinegar successfully to remove rust. I see that Home Depot sells a 30% cleaning version. As for oil I use mineral oil as it is cheap and easy to live with. The cleanest way to remove oil from tools without any residue is to use xylol.”

Reader in T.H. Montana wrote ask about my predictions for the November presidential election and its consequences. I replied:

“Sadly, I believe that the Democrat Machine may steal another election.  So stand by for ultra-socialist Kamalanomics.  There could be a stock market crash sometime between election day and the January swearing-in ceremony, so Kamala could blame the crash on her predecessor — Old Creepy Joe, who has been thrown under the bus. A market crash and Great Depression 2 would be their excuse to launch many new Federal agencies, much like FDR did, in the 1930s.”

SaraSue sent us this snippet:

“Still reeling from just being a witness to the devastation in East Tennessee and Western North Carolina, although I was not impacted in Middle Tennessee.  Each day I go through an area of preps carefully considering what I should improve, knowing full well that no amount of preps could have prepared a family, or prevented such a disaster of entire communities being swept away by flood waters twice the force of Niagara Falls.

Things I am changing here – on a mission to become a ham operator.  Firstly, I have ordered some Baofeng long-range radios that I can communicate with on a private channel with a local group here, and to listen in on emergency response activities.  Secondarily, I will purchase ham operator equipment and work on my licensing.  Communication capability was, and still is, a huge problem during and after the disaster.  The other is to get my home wired so that I can hook up the gas generator easily from outside the house (transfer switch) so I can run the well pumps and the various freezers.  I also ordered more 5-gallon gas cans.  Many in the disaster zones are on day 7+ of no power and gas is scarce in those regions. Those are the two things I can improve on with the resources I have.

I have made as large a financial donation as I can to a trusted group that has had boots on the ground from the beginning.  It’s good to see the larger organizations now stepping up with donations and bringing large trucks in.  The needs keep changing.  Of course, people need rescue, food, water, clothing, shelter, a hot shower, but also chainsaws and ATVs.  A group with a mule pack has been making trips into the remote mountains and dropping supplies that way and bringing people out.  Private helicopters have been flying in and out.  The death toll is enormous and the true numbers are not published.  I can tell you that most people are extremely irritated at FEMA and the government in general for their slow and inadequate responses to Americans while sending billions to countries elsewhere.  Enough said.  On a positive note, the people here are incredibly generous, and hardworking. They will not give up on our neighbors regardless of what the government does or does not do.  This is going to be a long haul.”
