The latest update from Reader SaraSue:

“About two weeks ago, I took delivery of a beautiful bred Jersey heifer (A2/A2 genetics) from a wonderful farmer and his wife. The first week was about her settling in and feeling comfortable. The second week has been about establishing trust with her – she eats cut-up apples out of my hand. I have purchased the supplies needed for her health, birthing, and milking by hand, so the next step is attempting to halter train her, brush her, and keep building trust. One small step at a time in anticipation of a calf and milking in about 6 weeks. My plan is to get the stanchion built, and purchase a refurbished Surge electric milker in case my arthritic hands can’t do a proper milking job. The 1/4 acre garden fencing is in progress, but due to food shortages, I’m thinking about expanding that garden to 1/2 acre (selling/bartering the excess that I can’t put up, along with extra eggs). With a calf due and a garden to put in, I’m going to be one busy, tired lady. “

A reader in western Washington wrote to mention the upcoming Peninsula Fruit Club grafting show and clinic. It opens to the public at 10am on March 19th, 2022.  He notes:

“We’ve done this over 20 years. We’ll have over 375 varieties of fruit available to start trees or grow vines and berry canes.
In addition, we usually have several hundred plants of many kinds propagated by members, donated to the club for our fundraiser.  Many of these are not available from nurseries in usual times, let alone in these C19 and war-crazy times.
Prices are kept low.  To get a grafted fruit tree made, is less than $10.   Donated plant selections vary year to year and you may find bay leaf [Laurel] tree starts, beebalm starts, ten varieties of grapes, several varieties of figs. But it is always a fun surprise to see what members decide to bring each year for their donation.
This event is worth driving a few hours to get to.  For serious preppers, you should come get 10 trees started, put them in pots your first year unless you want to plant now.  This year I’m bringing several edible chestnut trees that I started in 2021.”
The grafting show is being held at the West Side Improvement Club, 4109 West E Street, Bremerton, Washington 98312. To find details on the event, at Facebook, see “Peninsula Fruit Club.”

Reader H.S. had this comment:

“A good article from Pat, on kerosene lanterns. One tip that may prove useful: Eventually you will have to wash lantern globes. I take a cloth dish towel and get it soaking wet. Then I lay it flat in the bottom of the sink…that way it will cushion the globe and keep it from breaking if I drop it.  And believe me, it’s very easy to drop a wet soapy globe. A lantern without a globe is ruined — same as an oil lamp without a chimney.”

Several readers have noted some parallels between current events in Ukraine, and Michael Z. Williamson’s 2019 fictional anthology Freehold ResistanceIn a follow-up e-mail, Mike mentioned: “They’re following a lot of the techniques we had the rebels using in Resistance, complete to tracking invaders by their phone apps, removing street signs, and from some reports, sending out fake casualty reports to Russian families.”  Mike also noted:  “Buy [this book] in hard copy. There’s no telling when downloads of any tactically useful book will get removed from downloadable sources.”
