SurvivalBlog presents another edition of The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods— a collection of news bits and pieces that are relevant to the modern survivalist and prepper from “JWR”. Our goal is to educate our readers, to help them to recognize emerging threats, and to be better prepared for both disasters and negative societal trends. You can’t mitigate a risk if you haven’t first identified a risk. Today, we take another look at invasive Murder Hornets.
Chicago Charts the COVID-19 Comorbidities
Our Editor-At-Large Michael Z. Williamson sent us this data from Cook County, Illinois: Corona Comorbidities.
Are There More Murder Hornet Nests?
Reader C.B. spotted this troubling news: Destruction of murder hornets nest doesn’t end threat. The article begins thusly:
“When scientists in Washington state destroyed the first nest of so-called murder hornets found in the U.S., they discovered about 500 live specimens in various stages of development, officials said Tuesday.
Among them were nearly 200 queens that had the potential to start their own nests, said Sven-Erik Spichiger, an entomologist leading the fight to kill the hornets.
“We got there just in the nick of time,″ he said.
Still, that didn’t end the threat from the giant insects that can deliver painful though rarely deadly stings to people and wipe out entire hives of honey bees.
Scientists think other nests already exist and say it’s impossible to know if any queens escaped before the first nest was destroyed.
Asian giant hornets, an invasive pest not native to the U.S., are the world’s largest hornet at 2 inches (5 centimeters) long, and a predator of other insects, including the honey bees that pollinate many of the crops in Washington’s multi-billion-dollar agriculture industry.”
Trump Lawyer Sidney Powell Predicts Court Action on Election
H.L. was the first of several readers to send us this: Trump Lawyer Sidney Powell: “We’re Getting Ready To Overturn Election Results In Multiple States”.
Florida Governor Proposes Expanded Stand Your Ground Law
Reader Tim J. sent us this: Gov. DeSantis proposes bill expanding Stand Your Ground law. Here is a snippet:
“DeSantis announced the proposal Tuesday, continuing his pledge from September to “crack down on violent and disorderly assemblies” in response to police brutality protests.
The proposal would expand the list of “forcible felonies” under Florida’s self-defense law to include property crimes. It would also make blocking traffic a third-degree felony and give immunity to drivers who “unintentionally” hit protesters blocking traffic.”
Hikers Find Century-Old Carrier Pigeon Note
A New York Times piece sent to us by regular link contributor D.S.V.: You’ve Got (Century-Old) Mail: Soldier’s Note Is Echo of World War I Era. The article’s subhead:
ATF Director Conspiring with Biden Team on Arm Braces
Pat Cascio wrote to mention that the NRA-ILA had this almost predictable news: BATFE Leadership Push Biden to Target Pistol Stabilizing Braces and Unfinished Receivers. JWR’s Comments: Please contact your senators and congressmen repeatedly and insist that they draft legislation protecting our lawful ownership pistol and “firearm” arm braces. There were only a few hundred thousand of the banned bumpfire stocks made. But there are more than 4 million arm braces now in circulation. At an average cost of $190 each, that is $760 million dollars worth. (More than three-quarters of a billion bucks.) So banning them would not be trivial. An outright ban with no grandfather clause would be an uncompensated Federal Regulatory “Taking” in violation of the Fifth Amendment, on a grand scale. And requiring Federal registration would absolutely swamp and backlog the ATF’s NFA Branch — probably for a decade or longer– during which time they’d surely fall farther behind on suppressor registrations. And by requiring a $200 transfer tax, that would essentially double every owner’s cost! This would be a bureaucratic nightmare.
Update on Mutated COVID-19 in Mink
C.B. also sent us this: WHO reports coronavirus discovered among mink populations in 6 countries. Here is a key quote:
The concern over mink population infections arises from the recent discovery of mutations in the virus among farmed mink in Denmark.
The “cluster 5” variant, as the WHO labels it, has a combination of mutations that have not been previously observed. The WHO says that “the implications of the identified changes in this variant are not yet well understood.”
“Initial observations suggest that the clinical presentation, severity and transmission among those infected are similar to that of other circulating SARS-CoV-2 viruses,” the WHO statement said on Friday.
However, The “cluster 5” variant has thus far shown to be less inhibited by antibodies than the normal virus is, which authorities fear may threaten the efficacy of vaccines in development across the globe.”
The Conservative Treehouse is Deplatformed
Linked over at the Whatfinger.com news aggregation site: WordPress deplatforms The Conservative Treehouse for no reason. JWR’s Comment: I recommend that anyone who blogs with WordPress via WordPress-owned servers should immediately migrate their sites to their own servers, as well as a backup server, for good measure. We did this more than 10 years ago, for SurvivalBlog’s hosting.
