  2. Raising the Diamond A144S10 Yagi Antenna

It has been a long, long time since I put up a directional antenna. I only remember doing it in the daylight and having an NCO around with a compass to aim the antenna.

I was wondering if folks install some kind of a compass rose around the base of these antenna, to aim it in the dark or in bad weather, without spending a lot of time to align it.? Also, you might have to quickly align with mobile units that are broadcasting in a very limited fashion.

Many decades ago, my folks had a TV antenna mast with a motor and control unit to align it to various TV stations up to about a hundred miles away. That was easy, because you could rotate the antenna until you got the best signal. But, that was with two fixed locations with one constantly broadcasting.

Is there any kind of gps calculator or formula, to give compass bearings between two points?

    1. I’ll use a high gain omni-directional antenna mounted high to receive, and a yagi at the base station to transmit. Mobiles might have to report the quadrant, or give you a phase line to approximate their general location. A three element yagi, or a moxon antenna has a fairly broad foot print, approximately 120 degrees. It is best to use a 5 element yagi that has a 90 degree pattern, but there again it may not be practical. A two element yagi would have a 180 degree foot print. Having more that one type of directional antenna in the bag gives one options. Learning how to make antennas allows one to make the antenna that fits the situation at the moment.
