1. What a patient man was David! He was anointed by Samuel when he was barely a teenager. Throughout his teens and twenties God kept giving him opportunities to learn skills that would be useful in his future role as king. At the same time, he was given challenges so that he would learn that God, not he himself, was in control of his life. As King Saul’s mental state continued to deteriorate, the people began to see that a new, better leader would be needed, and the Lord led them to choose David. Throughout this time, David honored King Saul as the ruler of Israel chosen by God and did not oppose him. Finally, only after the death of Saul, David accepted the leadership of Israel at the age of 30.

   What a great example he is for all of us!

   1. ummm did not saul hunt for david to kill him? did not david have at least a small following of men?

2. Yes, Saul tried several times to kill David. But David never attacked King Saul. Read 1 Samuel Chapter 24, where David had a chance to murder Saul and didn’t, out of respect.

   The men who followed David did so because, after all, David was an officer in Saul’s army. Also, men came to him who were discouraged with Saul’s leadership. But David never ordered his men to attack Saul or his army. In fact, he ordered the execution of a man who acted against King Saul (2 Samuel Chapter 1).
