SurvivalBlog presents another edition of The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods— a collection of news bits and pieces that are relevant to the modern survivalist and prepper from “JWR”. Our goal is to educate our readers, to help them to recognize emerging threats and to be better prepared for both disasters and negative societal trends. You can’t mitigate a risk if you haven’t first identified a risk. Today, we look at the advent of the Black Hornet Drone.

US Army Buys 9,000 Tiny ‘Black Hornet’ Drones
G.P. sent this: US Army Buys 9,000 Tiny ‘Black Hornet’ Drones Ahead Of Afghanistan Deployment. A snippet:
“The 1.16-ounce Black Hornet drone, developed by Prox Dynamics of Norway and later acquired by US-based FLIR Systems, is designed for local surveillance missions over the modern battlefield. The tiny drone has high-tech sensors that allow it to operate in day or night and has a flight time of approximately 25 minutes. Here’s a FLIR Systems promotional video of the Black Hornet:
According to Breaking Defense, the Army is procuring 9,000 systems over the next three years.
According to the service, each Black Hornet kit includes “the ground control system, which is composed of a base station with hand controller and display unit, and two air Vehicles (one day and one night). The display acts as the main hub for Soldiers to interact with the system, while the air vehicles are small, highly maneuverable airborne sensors with low visual and audio signatures that support pre-planned and on-the-fly reconnaissance missions.”

The World Murder Olympics
Reader Tim J. suggested some insightful reading, over at the Wilder, Wealthy, and Wise blog; In the World Murder Olympics, Communists Take Gold and Silver! Here is a quote:
“The biggest famine in human history was caused by communism, based on a bad idea and a stubborn decision to hold with ideology over reality. It was known as, ironically, The Great Leap Forward. Mao decided in 1957 that within 15 years, China could surpass the United Kingdom (The Guys Who Supply Evil Accents to Movies) in economic production. Mao was egged on to make this pronouncement based on Nikita Khrushchev’s 1957 pronouncement that in fifteen years that the U.S.S.R. would surpass the United States in economic production.”

Kentucky: Vultures are Eating Animals Alive
Several readers sent this: Black vultures are roosting in Kentucky and eating animals alive. A pericope:
“They’ll devour slimy newborn calves, full-grown ewes and lambs alive by pecking them to death.
First the eyes, then the tongue, then every last shred of flesh.
And there isn’t much defense against black vultures and turkey vultures, both of which are federally protected and cannot be killed without a permit.
The Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918 covers all migratory birds, their nests and their eggs, which means that the birds can’t be harmed without federal permission. Their nests can only be disrupted, as a deterrent, if there are no eggs or young in them.
But as the vultures, which are native to Kentucky, have multiplied in numbers nationally over the last two decades, they have become more of a problem for farmers. Each year, Kentucky farmers lose around $300,000 to $500,000 worth of livestock to these native vultures, according to Joe Cain, commodity division director for the Kentucky Farm Bureau.
It’s not just farm animals. Small pets may be at risk too.
The birds can be valuable contributors to the ecosystem, disposing cleanly of animal carcasses. But their increased numbers have made them more desperate for food in other forms — even alive.“
JWR’s Comment: This sorta reminds me of the 1970s posters and silkscreened T-shitrs showing two roosting vultures, with one saying to the other: “Patience my a**. I’m gonna kill something.”
