JWR’s Recommendations of the Week:

Here are JWR’s Recommendations of the Week for various media and tools of interest to SurvivalBlog readers. The focus is usually on emergency communications gear, bug out bag gear, books and movies that have any tie-in to disaster preparedness, and links to “how to” self-sufficiency videos. There are also links to sources for both storage food and food storage containers. You will also note an emphasis on history books and historical movies. This week the focus is on Silky Saws. (See the Gear & Grub section.)

Web Pages:

Reader “K. In The Desert” wrote to mention:

“I tripped over the Hansen Wheel web site while trying to figure out the correct name of a an old wagon part I have – the toothed, steel bracket thing the brake handle locks into. I have no interest other than as a possible (likely?) future customer.

They not only have a number of reasonably priced wagons – the parts and accessories areas are great. Prices look a little high compared to ‘finds’ but they seem to have a lot of very usable, hard to find items. The chuck wagon components section especially caught my eye.

For those in the snowy areas of the Redoubt, they have a number of sleighs that would be fun with the right horse.”

Reader Marc M. wrote with this recommendation:

“The ‘Bushcraft community’ often makes use of handheld pruning saws which they carry on backwards trips. One of the best brands is Silky.  I own their “Big Boy”, “Gomboy” and “Katana Boy” saws for my property.  Although I have a full assortment of axes, chainsaws, handheld crosscut and bow saws, these are far easier to use for a single individual. The largest model cuts extraordinarily fast and with minimal effort. My positive experience has caused me to buy spare blades which I have yet to need. I can see obvious applications on a homestead for this piece of valuable equipment. I have no connection to the manufacture and I’m simply a satisfied user. Do a web search on: ‘katanaboy’ and check out a few Silky saw videos.  I was quite impressed.”

This very small investment may save a life!
