The Editors’ Quote of the Day:

“We must not permit our respect for the dead or our sympathy for the living to lead us into an act of injustice to the balance of the living. I will not attempt to prove that Congress has no power to appropriate this money as an act of charity. Every member upon this floor knows it. We have the right as individuals to give away as much of our own money as we please in charity; but as members of congress we have no right to appropriate a dollar of the public money.” – Davy Crockett

  1. The entire story containing that speech by Congressman Crockett has always been very meaningful to me. I understand there is doubt that it’s a true story, but that doesn’t change the meaningfulness of the story one bit. You can find it in a few variations online by searching for “NOT YOURS TO GIVE”. Highly recommended. There isn’t a politician in our lifetime who’s been correct on the Constitution. And it’s never been more relevant – illegal aliens are a symptom. The Welfare State is the problem.
