Movies:

Prepper.  A 2016 fictional film. Surprisingly, it did not demean survivalism or prepping, although it had a couple of cliches. Most advanced preppers will consider this movie incredibly basic. But it could be worth lending to your Head-In-The-Sand neighbors, friends, and co-workers. Available on DVD. Also available for free streaming to Amazon Prime members. A side note: Jay Bowdy (the lead actor) sadly committed suicide in 2017.

The Gates of Jerusalem. A fascinating documentary on the history of The City of David. It was narrated by Richard Kiley. Despite a few mispronunciations by Kiley, it is well worth watching. Available on DVD. Also available for free streaming to Amazon Prime members.

  1. “The Complete Ketogenic Diet for Beginners…”- book recommendation

    JWR,
    My wife started the keto diet on January 6th of this year, which essentially means I also started, and the results have been amazing. I have lost and kept off 26 pounds and feel amazing.

    One word of caution to those considering it: After one week of venison-heavy meals, I woke up on a Saturday morning in excruciating pain and barely able to walk. Gout, induced by the high content of purines in venison (I’m a non-drinker) had rendered me literally crippled.

    I bring this up because I know that any long-term survival plan has figured in it a large amount of wild game meat which could prove to be very problematic. Without a round of Diclofenac to eliminate the pain and swelling, I’m not sure what I would have done. In a situation where modern medicine is unavailable, this could be catastrophic. Just another reason why a garden should be high on the priority list for those preparing. Even if wild game is plentiful, a diet heavy in those meats could prove to be disastrous for some.

Hmmm..the gout from venison comment is interesting, since my understanding related to red meat consumption is that venison does not have the antibiotics, hormones and level of uric acid content of “factory” meat and would not cause gout. I have a strong interest in nutrition as a basis for health and try to keep up on the subject. Long ago I gave up eating any “factory” red meat and only consume venison. I’ve never experienced a gout problem. However, current nutritional studies indicates that the process of “ketosis” may have it’s health drawbacks…but whatever works for anyone is a good thing. One of my favorite books is “What the Bible Says about Healthy Living” by Rex Russell. MD. Like most anything else in life, moderation and variety is important.

    1. For what it’s worth…

      • Seafood: Although it is recommended that a healthy diet includes a lot of fish, people who have gout should be aware that some seafood can increase levels of uric acid in the blood, and may make gout worse.
      • High purine content: Anchovies, codfish, haddock, herring, mackerel, mussels, sardines, scallops, trout
      • Medium purine content: Crab, lobster, oysters, shrimp.
      • Meat: Though no longer part of a common diet in the United States, organ meats, such as liver, sweetbreads, and brains, are most dangerous for those with gout.
      • High purine content: Bacon, turkey, veal, venison
      • Medium purine content: Beef, chicken, duck, ham, pork

      “Venison:

      Purine Level: 138 mg in 100 grams.
      Health Benefits: Though not often chosen as a fan favorite, venison is actually a pretty healthy meat, providing more protein, iron, vitamin B6, niacin and riboflavin than regular beef.
      Why Avoid: As mentioned previously, red meat is not a “go-to” for many health fanatics. Most professionals recommend that you limit red meat to only once or twice a week due to its high fat content and cholesterol-causing compounds. But on top of that, red meat like venison also contains a significant amount of purines, which can cause uric acid to build up and lead to symptoms of the infuriatingly-uncomfortable disease, gout.”

      Probably doesn’t apply to everyone, but for those affected, could be bad.

  3. My wife and I started keto in late February and we both feel great. My asthma is much improved, and I’m down 29 pounds. Most importantly, I’m finally in control of my appetite, not needing to snack every 2-3 hours. Check out Dr. Ken Berry’s youtube channel, and you’ll notice the Constitution hanging on the wall behind him (when filmed in his office.) He also wrote an excellent book about the big pharma/big ag/government collaboration, called “Lies My Doctor Told Me”.

    I researched the individual. Apparently, he has six children and a master’s degree.

    His shack-up companion claims he assaulted her.

    He goes on Facebook to announce his upcoming suicide, then follows through.

    Thirty-three years old.

    What kind of ‘man’, what kind of ‘adult’ abandons their family.

  5. I watched Prepper. It was OK. I think it was simplistic to the point of being misleading. It’s good for getting people to think about prepping, but basically zero on useful practical advice beyond “gee maybe you should have some food and water and self defense in your house”. I really thought the ending — last two or three minutes — without giving any spoilers — was ridiculous.

    According to the local county public announcement. So glad they are prioritizing law enforcement in a county with over 3,000 outstanbding warrants for everything from theft to manslaughter.

    1. Along with other veterans, I have been going on a “no fireworks” retreat for awhile now. Those loud boom and bangs are painful for some of us, especially when they are unexpected. More than once I have looked around for my M-14 to return fire.

  7. Watched the movie “Prepper” last night on Amazon. Once you get past the bad acting, it grows on you. good lessons for beginners, answers a lot of “what if’s”
    The last 15 minutes are a bit hokey, especially when the neighbors show up the first time with garden implements and then…..
    Decent overall.
