  1. With the health controversy surrounding deodorants and antiperspirants, you might consider coming up with an alternative solution now. Some people have tried alternatives involving baking soda, which is available cheaply, in quantity, at the local farm store. As for facial hair, might as well get used to it now because shaving with a stropped single edge is a fine art which few have the skills for… and cuts could become problematic. A beard is much simpler, requiring only a quick trim a couple times each week using a small scissor.

  2. After 15 years of marriage, the only item my wife could not wrap her head around is why a hand-held flashlight would cost $250.00. That persisted until I was compelled to use it on an over-aggressive panhandler, it’s 1000 retina-burning lumens sending him shrieking back into the darkness like a vampire. She now has one of her own with the addition of a crenellated bezel. I have created a monster.

  3. When looking for free books on amazon you must be careful to open the link to the book and double check that it is really “free”. Many of the books have “$0.00 kindle price” on the list page, but only if you pay $10/month for “Kindle Unlimited”. When you open the title link you often find the “kindle price” is not free but several dollars. Be careful…buyer beware.

  4. Another good idea would be to invest, if possible, in medical procedures that will be no longer available after SHTF. For example, and in relation to the male birth control point, would be a vasectomy. Obviously this needs to be well thought through, and only for those who are truly done having children. In my experience, it was well worth it! With my insurance, it was only $100 out of pocket. Another idea to ponder is LASIK. This is on my prep list, as contact lenses will be non existent. I do have several pairs of glasses stored away, but they will get in the way if working in rain, snow, or just get dripped on when working in heat.

    1. Before you decide that you are “done” having children, you should be aware that the child mortality rate was historically about 50 percent, and will return to that once trauma care, hospitals, public health, clean water, and septic systems are things of the past. Not to mention antibiotics, which may be things of the past sooner than expected.

If you have two children, you will be lucky if one of them survives to adulthood.

Try reading some 19th century children’s fiction, and count the number of funerals in a perfectly ordinary story that is NOT about people dying.

Who exactly do you think will take care of you and your spouse when you are too old to chop wood? Your one surviving child?

In all traditional cultures, the greatest survival asset for yourself and your group was a large family. Check the Bible on the subject.

And the condoms will eventually be used up. A book on Natural Family Planning will be more use in safely spacing pregnancies

  5. The link to the 2012 article about buying inexpensive groceries in a small town is obsolete, at least in our area – Walmart no longer price matches.
We have WM, Harvey’s and IGA – shop the best price, loss leaders, clearance and use coupons, Ibotta and CheckOut51.
Also we have a CVS – they have deals using their extra care buck program. It takes some planning but I do pretty good.

    1. I wonder how much latitude local managers have on this. The local Walmart here still price matches, though you do have to bring in the coupon or ad to show the checker. If you do this, they will simply change the price on the item you are buying – but only for you. I’ve seen several instances in which the person right behind tried to get the same price and the checker wouldn’t without the coupon or ad.

  6. There is Freecycle.org, which, as the name implies, is a network of people who either have useful items they are willing to give away for free, or want to receive offered items for free, or ideally, in the fullness of time, both. It’s done on a local basis (usually within a single city) and usually, the items are given to the first reasonable responder. Hard to beat the price!

  7. My only quibble, is why are you depending on “canned” oxygen, and/or portable oxygen tanks? The portables are great for travel: whether to Costco or the doctor’s office. But for everyday needs, why not get an oxygen concentrator? It is a device which concentrates the oxygen from a gas supply (typically ambient air) to supply an oxygen-enriched gas stream. Here is an article that has some valuable info.

It is good idea to have several plans for your oxygen, as medical supply companies will be impaired or non existant. Also, get some lung excercises from your doctor and have a physical therapist work with you to help your lungs be the best that they can be. My mother did all of these things, and managed her COPD problems for much longer than anticipated. Good Luck!
