The famed (to me, anyway) Michelson–Morley experiment, attempting to detect the invisible “ether” that was supposed to fill all space between the planets. The detection of the speed of light was just a side benefit to the original purpose of their experiment.
The Physics building at the U.S. Naval Academy is named for Michelson.
