Teri’s big break came in 1968 when she appeared as Roberta Lincoln, the ditzy “hippychick” secretary in Assignment Earth, episode 55 of the original Star Trek. Who can forget that psychodellic pink and orange mini-skirt!
The episode was designed as the pilot of a spin-off series, and lots of high-power agents were after interviews for their clients. One of Garr’s competitors was Dawn Wells, fresh off Gilligan’s Island.
But the show’s creator, Gene Roddenberry, took a special interest in Garr, saying she had “a good quality all of her own.”
“I didn’t dare hope I’d get any further,” recalls Garr, “but…I was dizzy with joy — and that dizziness helped me get into character.”
