SurvivalBlog presents another edition of The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods— a collection of news bits and pieces that are relevant to the modern survivalist and prepper from “HJL”. I love “scientific studies”! Apparently coffee is the key to long life and happiness.
Occupy D.C.
Reader T.P. sent in this article detailing a movement that started in Charlottesville and is marching to Washington D.C. over a 10 day period. They expect to end the march on September 6th and the march will then turn into an occupy movement. There is no scheduled end date for the occupation. Of course, since it’s a snowflake march, you can bring bags and they will shuttle them for you so you can have access to them at the end of each day. We are still not sure what the goal of the march is. They claim anti-white supremacy, but it sounds more like an anti-Trump rally. I wonder who can take 10 days off of work to do this? Do they even have a job?
Firewood
Reader S.P. sent in this nineteen minute video on identifying different types of wood along with instructions on which ones are best to use and which ones to avoid for cooking. If you are considering using wood for heating or cooking, you’ll want to watch this video to get an idea of what resources are available in your area and what you can use them for.
Reason #4098 to Remove Your Child from Public School
In JWR’s book “Land of Promise”, he makes reference to “LGBTT2QQAAIIPDPPANGNAA peoples”. There were many skeptics who thought this outlandish at the time and something that would never actually happen. Now, reader L.A. sends this photo in from the bulletin board at an elementary school. Yep, it’s happening. The re education of your children is almost complete. Get them out now while you still have a chance to salvage their minds from the progressive/socialist agenda.
Coffee
In this day and age of junk science, you can find a “scientific” study that will prove just about any point that you would like to make. Apparently four cups of coffee a day could slash your chance of early death. The study was observational so it didn’t isolate all the variables and it couldn’t actually prove anything, but I like it. If four cups reduces your chance of death, then more is better, right? I think I’m going to live forever! Thanks to DSV for the link.
o o o
On another coffee related note, my “Handybrew” finally bit the dust. I loved it because it made 32oz all at once by the immersion method and was easy to clean as well as being easy to use. Even in it’s broken state, it was tough to throw it away. Two years of daily use was a long life for polycarbonate plastic. Sadly, they don’t make it anymore. There were several types that were similar like the “clever coffee dripper”, but they weren’t big enough. I’ve since switched to the “French Press” method using the Secura SS 34oz French Press. I’ve been using it for about a week now and it is super easy to clean and maintain. Since it’s stainless steel, it’s considerably more durable. I briefly considered the 50oz version, but a small, inner voice thought that might be over-the-top. I think this is going to work.
Children
Reader T.J. sent in a video from one of our favorite vloggers, Wranglerstar. In this video, he is installing a timber framed planting box that he previously built o with his tractor. The fun part of the video is that he is teaching his son Jack how to use the tractor. That really brings back memories. There is nothing quite like passing that knowledge and wisdom on to your children and guiding them as they grow.
North Korea
Kim Jong-un is playing a dangerous game again. The west has long been used to his constant threats and escalations. It’s like watching a five year old throw a temper-tantrum in the grocery Isle because his mom won’t buy him some sugar loaded cereal – except this five year old now has a nuclear arsenal at his disposal. In the past, he’s thrown his temper-tantrums, threatening to blow up South Korea and we eventually give in, giving him what he wants. The likelihood of pre-emptively striking North Korea over South Korea is actually pretty small. But Japan is a different story. That changes the dynamics considerably. North Korea Fires Missile Over Japan. Thanks to reader P.S. for the link.
Venezuela
Reader H.L. sent in this update on the status of Venezuela. The country is slowly starving to death as the progressive socialist government struggles to maintain power. The government is increasing is violent stranglehold on the people and the people get more desperate as they get hungrier. It’s a delicate balance that threatens to collapse at any moment. Hyperinflation has set in and without external help, there isn’t much chance that it will be resolved peaceably. It’s too bad the progressive/socialists in the U.S. aren’t paying attention here. Or maybe they are. Perhaps this is what they want after all.
News Tips:
Please send your news tips to HJL. (Either via e-mail of via our Contact form.) These are often especially relevant, because they come from folks who watch news that is important to them. Due to their diligence and focus, we benefit from fresh “on target” news. We often “get the scoop” on news that is most likely ignored (or reported late) by mainstream American news outlets. Thanks!
Concerning the WRANGLERSTAR video, his son’s name is Jack. Brian is his hired-hand.
I recently made your site my homepage so it’s the first thing I see when I open up my computer. I’m REALLY enjoying the great info! Love the mix of history, alternative news, prepper/homestead tips and tricks…it’s nice to have finally found a site I relish as my homepage 🙂 Thanks to everyone for all the useful information!
Just to clarify, in the Wranglerstar video referenced, Cody was joking when he said that he built the planter box 4 years ago; it was actually about 3 months ago but he has not had time to install it yet. Also, Jack is his son; Brian is an assistant who works with Cody twice a week.
regarding the article announcing the Charlottesville to DC march, the article states in the section on Housing, “If you have specific housing requirements, you may have to meet them at your own expense”. And under the Food section, “There will be basic meals, water, and snacks provided for marchers. We plan to accommodate a range of dietary restrictions (vegetarians, vegans, gluten-free) but cannot assure that we will meet your personal standards or preferences”. So much for inclusion. If you don’t like what the organizers provide, tough, you are on your own. And you have to pay for it yourself. That is so contrary to the liberal mantra of inclusion and accommodation paid for by someone else.
Also about the “march” I have been told if you watch on Craig’s List you will see listings to march for $25.oo, I’m not sure if I heard per hour or per day. YOu asked how they could afford to take off from work to do this? Well it would seem the “marches” ARE their job.
Get the big French press coffee maker. There will be ‘those days’ and occasional friends visiting.
@Ken,
You know the saying “two is one, one is none”…Guests won’t be an issue 🙂
