We’ve Been Doing Preparedness Wrong For A Long Time- Part 2, by Old Bobbert

We’re continuing to take a look at how preppers have looked at “emergencies” versus crises. We must learn the “new old” mindset is that is required. We’ve read about the some of the issues and diseases that caused massive deaths in the mid nineteenth century. Now we are moving on to see what we can do better post-SHTF.

Preppers Must Do More To Prevent Sickness

Whooping cough, bad water, starvation, freezing, you name it, and they had it. They died from it. We who call ourselves thinkers and preppers must do better. We now know how important the washing of our hands can be. Now we know that prevention can be a life savior. Sicknesses like these have been returned to our lives, and now we will have to deal with them again. We can not simply re-establish the poor practices of corrupt government that have crept into our lives. The culture of deceit, of low principles must go. The ignorant youth dependent upon the welfare state and the modern mob rule and votes for sale don’t work.

As preppers, survivors, and re-builders, we must carry the burden of individual responsibility and self government.  We must provide the education and concern for others that was the foundation of our republic. We must rekindle the fires of freedom wrapped tightly in rational responsibility once again in the souls of our children. They will be our future in our new old world.

Prepare To Deal With The Coming World

We must prepare to deal with the new old world conditions we will be living in. Both in our small families and small communities. Either we will manage to work together as responsible brothers and sisters, as a family, or we will die alone in the cold darkness of the failure to live with self discipline and individual responsibility.

We know that it is not just a manageable emergency that we are looking at in the our near future. We know about the coming financial crunch. Yet we are still uneasy at planning on the overnight onslaught of “total non-usage” of any currently usable form of financial activity. None of the current financial transaction devices and currencies, except for simple bartering and pennies and nickels will still be important. Barterers will need small change, like pennies and nickels.

We really do not want to think about how we can “fairly and easily” compensate an industrious adult man for chopping and stacking four+ cords of firewood in the Idaho hot summers to use for our heat next winter when there is no recognized currency. We do not yet know how, after the SHTF, we will “honestly” acquire even simple aspirin for a bothersome headache much less obtain the medical “experience” necessary to suture a serious backyard axe accident that might injure an inexperienced teenager trying to help their family make it through the cold night. Reading a book or watching a video (without electricity) will not qualify or enable a tired and very frightened adult who is desperately trying to prevent the loss of blood that will soon result in the child’s death.

Learning Medical Treatment

Yes, we can, and should, practice suturing on the especially fresh skin of a ripe orange. During that simple practical exercise, do not nick the interior fruit. Make sure that there is very loud crushing music plus someone shouting in your ear as to distract you during the test procedure.

Do not fail to instruct your companion who is holding the orange to move it just very slightly and suddenly every so often. Why? Because that is the real world of post-SHTF homestead medical response. Knowing that you will be the next orange holder, try to make it very realistic practice. This will help you learn now how to save lives later. Do not make it easy, for easy is always a route directly to failure. Train hard now so that your future reality can be a success every time you are tried by a medical situation.

Adjust Thinking To Mid-1800s

We preppers must adjust our thinking and our planning to an overnight reversion to the mid-1800’s, say about 1840. The entire electric grid system consisted of many miles of telegraph lines, and in about 1859 the “Carrington effect” (solar flare EMP) shut down the then total grid system. Letters from California to Maryland often took 3+ months by way of a ship. The postage was often paid by the recipient, not the sender.

Questions To Consider

We need to consider these questions:

  • How will we successfully handle the legality of a new marriage, when there are no governmental procedures to be followed?
  • How will we deal with death certificate situations.
  • Who will investigate civil mayhem and civil strife/conflicts? A sheriff, marshal, or community policeman or police woman will need to be paid somehow.
  • Who will be judge and jury when needed?

Awe shucks, here we go again with the tough stuff. I looked to the heavens and said, “I want George to fix these things for me.” And from heaven the answer was, “Sorry, you are George.” Get busy, and fix your problems together. Do it now.

Dealing With These New Truths

Okay, here is what and how we can deal with these new truths in our lives.

  1. Resort to prayer. (At the very least try to use the AA solution– dear Higher Power.)
  2. Journal/record everything, especially the questions and answers.
  3. Never “walk alone”. It’s still a good song. Find your 12 step-type buddy.
  4. Do your search engine search for 1840 everyday life aspects.

Research Example

Here is just one example of how to do #4. Simply type into the search section of your favorite computer search application an activity name followed by the date “1840”. An example could be “ shoe strings 1840 era” and then “Google says”.

Information about “Clothing, Jewelry, and Personal Adornment” at Encyclopedia.com said, “… In the Elizabethan era, shoes were often secured with straps, laces, buckles and … through the shoe, were hand-sewn of sturdy thread until about the 1840s, when …”

Now you know enough to finish this type of research piece all by yourself.

Message From My Wife

As a fact of the angst created by the writing of these preparedness articles, my wife has asked me to include for her the two facets she deems to be worthy of inclusion, so here we go:

  1. She has prayed for twenty plus years for me to find my sense of humor, and now she prays to understand it. Now the readers are the recipients without waiting.
  2. About 25 years ago, shortly after moving from Ohio, Bobbert went to our church pastor and asked about an emergency preparedness plan. He said, “Sorry, we do not have one of our own. We will use the emergency preparedness plan of the next higher level church authority.” We will call this authority the Stake President. So Bobbert went to the Stake President, and he said, “Sorry, but we do not have one of our own, so we will use our city emergency preparedness plan.” So Bobbert went to see the city manager and he said, “Sorry but we do not actually have a preparedness plan of our own. In an emergency we will use the county emergency preparedness plan.” So Bobbert went to the county administrator and asked about the county’s emergency preparedness plan and the administrator said, “We do have a excellent emergency preparedness plan. We are very proud of our plan, and we were able to pattern ours on the standard federal plan model for communities of our size and inherent growth patterns. It really is a terrific plan.” So finally, Bobbert was able to ask someone, “May I have five copies of the plan so I can make it available to the county, the city, and our church on two levels?” And the happy county administrator said, “Sorry, but it is being revised currently, and we expect it to be returned soon.” So Bob asked, “About when do you expect it to be back for use?” The county administer’s answer was, “We are told it will be probably about another 12 to 18 months.” So Bobbert came home and we started our own preparedness plan, and we have never looked back, until now.

My wife just said it’s important to state that we live in Utah, which is known to be very prepared state with a great preparedness reputation, and while we do have a very good rate of preparation, it could be a lot better.

Dangers and Strangers

Actually Utah is not as good as it should be, especially as we are directly in the path of the carefully calculated fall out patterns of the super heated ashes from the super volcano named “ Yellowstone National Park”.

Did you know that in June of 2017, just one month ago, Yellowstone Park had 876 minor earthquakes? That’s 876 warning notes nailed to our front doors. I ask you, did you see your warning?

With tourists all over our state, what happens if the ash comes? Will they knock on our doors? Will you have room and provisions for people caught in a crisis in your area? Think about it, now before they knock at your door pleading for food.

Our Plan To Aid Others and Ourselves

In our home, we currently have a great many 3-ring binders (about 73) with 20+ years of information pertaining to pertinent new old world information and especially how to renew and how to do many of the daily activities we will need to regenerate to have a good life after we get through the early weeks and months of the SHTF event.

Our personal plan is to be the community source of knowledge needed in our new-to-us old world. My home library has 15 years of collected survivalist magazines above the top bookcase shelf. We have many biographies of both successful and historical personages. Our books include many illustrated tomes of “this is how to do it”. And we also have started to quietly accumulate a small variety of everyday inexpensive medicinal and herbal goodies for our personal use and for barter. The contents will be fairly inexpensive and easy to pay for.

The returnable container deposits will be enormous, because we will not be able to manufacture replacement small bottles and jars. I plan to accept silver coins and/or written IOU’s for a certain number of hours of labor. And when they return the empty containers, we can talk with them about their current situations and perhaps help them to help themselves.

After all, we are age 76 +, and I am fully disabled with COPD. I am using oxygen 24/7. In our reality situation, someone has to plant, weed, and harvest our gardens. I have really tried to prepare for our new old world life. Not everyone will have the ability or finances to stock up on medicines, but all of us can at least secure a few month’s reserve supply of the regular medications we are now using for ourselves.

Herbs, Medications, and Information

Those of us who are a part of a small survivalist group can possibly pool an order to purchase medications for a large enough order to make shipping charges per group member lower. There are many reputable foreign nation pharmacies that are very inexpensive with excellent quality meds.

Do your money security and medication quality checking very carefully. Do your homework. We did and the dividends of meds plus peace of mind are wonderful.

We are sure that we are called to be an example and a teacher in the coming hard times after we have survived the SHTF event. And it will be important for all of us to help others as much as may be possible. Information can save lives. Our books on herbal medications and their correct growth and usages will be very valuable to many.

Remember The Five P’s of Real Life Success

Proper preparation prevents poor performance.

In the hope that the bad news start of this article has proven to be a good restart for your preparedness planning, I remain your good buddy.

  1. Utah is not as ready as many believe. The LDS church ask them to prepare but many do not. The New house, Car, Cloths, and of course the New and best in Electronics. We have to have all the new cell phones and I Pads,And of course the BIG screen TV. Now how can I afford to buy bulk food? They don’t!
There answer is I’ll ask the Bishop for food and supply’s. Guess what Most of them no longer think any thing will happen. And so it goes.
The LDS church has a lot of supply’s and It may or may note be available.Depending on the Government and what they may take as well as members who may try and help themselves. It will be dog eat dog.
Don’t depend on the Church,as most don’t plan on anything happening. Make your own plan and preps.
    Gods blessings to all.

    1. Interesting. Either way we’d be screwed. You’re probably right though. In 1840 they had a huge infrastructure in place of industrialization, farming etc that did not depend on electricity. If we lost the grid today, we lose 100% of everything. There is literally no societal contingency plan for such an event. Thinking further, maybe even 1240 would be better off. Even then, they had a feudal system in place that organized society by land owners, artisans, farmers etc.
I think if we totally lost the grid, we would be more like cave men living in modern homes with no sewage, plumbing and no light. It’d go south pretty quick.

  2. How do you plan to survive without compressed oxygen? Do you have a portable O2 concentrator that can run off of solar? Do you have a 10+ year supply of membranes?

    1. yes to

      portable “inogin” batt concentrator plus
a standard floor model concentrator plus
12 solar panels that move with the sun plus
      a powerful wind turbine plus
a bank of 12each 6 volt gel batts in the garage plus
a full blown sw radio system

  3. Old Bobbert, After 9/11/01 everyone jumped on the preparedness bandwagon. Our state, county, city plus church regional, stake and local leaders all developed emergency plans. The state got federal funding and free CERT and First Aid programs were offered everywhere.

My church had me establish both congregational and family plans to determine actual preparedness of families, individuals and groups. Then a 12 month plan was designed to help families purchase, grow, preserve food within a budget. Most church activities centered around a preparedness theme so folks could learn ‘how to’.

I was assigned to work with the city to design a full day ‘preparedness fair’ held at our church. The city provided all types of support and training and our church provided mini-classes and teachers for major preparedness topics. The city advertised the fair on TV and newspapers and we had local reporters covering the fair. It was considered to be a huge success with several hundred attendees from all over the city.

A couple of years later, central Florida experienced three hurricanes within 3 months. Again, everyone beat the preparedness drum. That lasted for about 15 months before folks when back to their usual brain dead motions.

Now days, nobody gives a hoot; they just want the government to give them stuff. Even the church members expect to be given whatever they ask for, not just what they need. In our area, there is a new era of ‘tough love’ when folks come to the church leaders demanding items. Those who are physically able are required to perform some sort of labor or service, depending on their age and circumstances. The complaints and non-compliance are amazing! And this is under our current economy and situation; just think what will happen when there really is an event of some kind!!

    1. I also feel a call to help our church prepare for any upcoming disaster or new way of life but I am not sure where to start. I would like to put something together to present a plan to the deacon board. Can you point me in the right direction. I do like the idea of a “preparedness fair” also. Blessings to you and all those who read this blog.

      1. Hi Nana,
1st … contact your local level(s) , town & county, of government and inquire about what may have already been done as far as an emergency response plan being i place now.
also contact the local utility management, your local chamber , your local inter-faith church group, etc for the same type of response planning.
2nd .. do a search engine search like this “small town emergency response planning ‘ where you will there find some good starting places.
3rd,, talk to your paster about his support. talk to the deacons about how they, as individuals, feel about emergency response. and’ write notes on every thing you do or say or hear or read!!!
4th.. get a partner x two, because as a trio of like minded members of your church, you will get more done faster and easier, with far fewer mistakes and
5th .. rely heavily on help from God, check out the new testament book of James, chapter 1, verses 1 to 10 with top billing on the wonderful message to all of us in verse 5
        good luck
        old bobbert / bob

  4. Thanks for the article. It reminds me I need to stock up on some of my wife’s prescriptions. Any recommendations for online pharmacies that do not require prescriptions?

  5. 911 is over sixty minutes from my home on a good day! Things like fire, defense, or medical issues are things I must deal with or do without! If it can wait an hour or more, then it most likely was not an emergency or it is too late to matter.

I work in emergency medicine and do not know a single provider able to handle mass needs. They simple do not have the manpower, equipment, or budget to handle more than everyday expected needs. Emergency or not, I want a better plan than listening to a busy signal!

      1. Old Bobbert: hang in there. we’re not done till God says we’re thru. My hubby has COPD at 81. He only has 15% lung capacity. Medical folks say he should have been dead years ago. Stubborn old geezer.

        1. THANKS SO VERY MUCH. I DO NOT KNOW ANYONE ELE WITH COPD. MY DAILY MEDS COUNT IS AT 20 THESE DAYS. YOUR REPLY TOTALLY JUSTIFIED FOR ME THE TIME AND EFFORT TO HAVE HAD NINE ARTICLES PUBLISHED IN THIS TERRIFIC BLOG THROUGH MANY YEARS.. THANKS SO MUCH

    1. Government regulation and recording are a relatively recent phenomenon (last 100-150 years). In the past the churches and families maintained records of births, deaths and marriages. Only with the advent of taxes did the government find the need to record it.

  6. My wife and I looked for land from New York, Texas, Arizona, Idaho, Montana, and Utah. We ruled Utah immediately out when the real estate agent told us there is a $40,000 flat charge to drill for water in the state of Utah. Not sure if that was the entire state or just the area near Powell where we were looking. We settled on land in the Redoubt for obvious reasons. Good article.

    1. YES, THE copd is the unintended results of 55 yeas of smoking. Kathy took me to the emergency room on dec 18th at noon with what we thought was the flu. . i do not remember admission but i do remember waking upon a hospital bed in restraints at about 8 pm, on dec 28th.I had lost 35 lbs while in a coma. I said no to smoking 10-15 times daily forth next 6 years and then my church local leaders called me as a volunteer in our 12 step addiction recovery program. On my 4th meeting i realized that I had not wanted a smoke since the 1st recovery meeting. This is very unusual. the folks there that nite say they saw me at the moment of release from the need to smoke. Now Kathy and I are assigned leaders 4 our group weekly. we love it!

  7. It sounds like you’ve got things figured out, your health problems are a huge disadvantage but being able to generate electricity might give you some barter potential. Do you have a stash of rechargeable batteries?
I’ve got a couple older neighbors I’ve know for over 20 years, I’m often helping them out plowing snow and such. I figure when everything tanks I’ll take care of them, maybe you have generated a similar relationship with your neighbors.

  8. The State Government and National Guard do not plan and prepare realistically. The upper echelon are political appointees – normally lawyers – and the lower echelon are eight hour employees. There is no imagination or grit.

Being a member of the State EMC staff for four years I am appalled at their unpreparedness.

Literally and/or figuratively speaking, if the Russian tanks are crashing through or Chinese hordes are racing by, 12 to 18 months producing a finalized plan ain’t cutting it. That is just the plan…that doesn’t even include preparation. And, as you pointed out, there are four layers of dedicated people waiting for guidance.

When all the government levels finally report in and attempt to order “goods and services” they will be horribly surprised when they compete for the same “goods and services”. When the music stops, multiple commercial and government agencies would have planned on the same resources. The prep part (unsure where it fit in the execution timeline – after the plan?) means having the resources in your back pocket and all who will use to be trained up.

Take the lead for your family.

Additionally, good job to the LDS community. I am not a member but am impressed at their attempt to be team oriented.

    Dave

  9. Comments on the Yellowstone Fallout and Nuclear fallout. Watch out for the jet stream. It wiggles up and down daily. It can go directly south for a ways then back to east then north east etc. The only safe places are west of the starting area. The Japanese used it to sent balloons with incendiaries to start forest fires in Oregon. They had limited success with this. The real surprise is they had enough knowledge about the jet stream to pull this off successfully. We didn’t find out about it until the B29 bombers started reporting the head and cross winds they were running into on their bomb runs.
