The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods

SurvivalBlog presents another edition of The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods. This column is a collection of news bits and pieces that are relevant to the modern survivalist and prepper from JWR. Our goal is to educate our readers, to help them to recognize emerging threats, and to be better prepared for both disasters and negative societal trends. You can’t mitigate a risk if you haven’t first identified a risk. In today’s column, we look at some escalation in the Ukraine war.

Further Ukraine War Escalation

The leftist/globalist CNN reports: From a call with Putin to an experimental strike, a dramatic week transforms the war in Ukraine. Here is a pericope:

“The past seven days have fundamentally changed Ukraine’s long conflict, and at a breakneck pace ahead of Donald Trump’s inauguration in January. The week marks a seismic escalation that nevertheless risks fading fast in the fatigue swamping the war, so it is worthy of a recap.

The White House publicly authorized Ukraine Sunday to fire missiles it supplied into Russia proper, which it swiftly did Monday. Moscow responded by using an experimental medium-range missile, with hypersonic speeds and a multiple warhead system usually reserved for nuclear payloads, to strike Dnipro Thursday. Putin claimed the “Oreshnik” could evade all Western air defense.”

Cars Owners Pushing Back Against The Subscription Model

Another from C.B.: Why Consumers Are Pushing Back Hard Against The Subscription Model. Here is a quote:

“The subscription model is a way of marketing car features to consumers that relies on a monthly or yearly payment rather than outright purchase. This can be related to hardware (such as activating a cars heated seats) or software (such as advanced infotainment features or navigation). The owner of the vehicle is typically able to activate preferred features through an online interface, which means having a connected car becomes a requirement. Features can be purchased directly through the car, usually via the infotainment screen, or through an app on a mobile device. Subscriptions can be canceled at any point, meaning the feature will be deactivated immediately.

Over-the-air updates are closely related to the subscription model. When an automaker wants to issue an update to a vehicle, they can now do so without the car having to see the inside of a garage, simply by sending the update out over the internet. Not all over-the-air updates are part of a subscription, however. Some are issued for free. If an infotainment system needs a bug fix or a security update, for example.”
