The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods

SurvivalBlog presents another edition of The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods. This column is a collection of news bits and pieces that are relevant to the modern survivalist and prepper from JWR. Our goal is to educate our readers, to help them to recognize emerging threats, and to be better prepared for both disasters and negative societal trends. You can’t mitigate a risk if you haven’t first identified a risk. In today’s column, we look at the D-Day anniversary celebration.

D-Day + 80 Years

This year will likely be the last major D-Day anniversary with living veterans in attendance. Organizers are going all-out.

The Mount Kilauea Volcano Reawakens

Linked over at the Whatfinger.com news aggregation site: Eruption Alert: Kīlauea Volcano Awakens After Nearly 50 Years, Prompting Increased Safety Warnings.

A pericope:

“The Kīlauea volcano in Hawaii has erupted, marking its first activity in a previously dormant area within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park since December 1974. The eruption began early Monday morning, prompting a swift escalation in alert levels by the U.S. Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO). The ground-based hazard alert level was elevated from “watch” to “warning,” and the Aviation Color Code was upgraded from orange to red, signaling significant concerns for both ground and air safety.”

Google Map Glitch Sends 40 Cars Down Dirt Road

Reader F.J. sent us this: Google is forced to fix maps after glitch sends 40 cars including semi truck down dirt road, forcing sheriff’s deputies to rescue them. The article begins:

“Google was forced to fix a glitch in their navigation system after multiple cars, including a semi-truck, became stranded on a dirt road, forcing the sheriff’s department to rescue them.

Emery County Sheriff Tyson Huntington told ABC4 News when drivers traveling to ‘Utah‘ put Google search in maps they end up in a remote area called East Mountain in Emery County.

It has been an ongoing issue where motorists – mostly out-of-towners-  end up making an emergency call for help because they are either lost, stuck, or have run out of gas, with most of the SOS calls coming in after midnight, Huntington said.

On Friday, an 18-wheel semi-truck carrying a 53-foot reefer trailer full of Red Bull got stuck in the mud after its navigation system took him to East Mountain Road. The driver and his truck were rescued, but officials noted it was ‘the worst one.’

New Street Drug: Fentanyl Mixed With Animal Sedative

Fentanyl Mixed With Potent Animal Sedative Is All The Rage. An excerpt:

“Both cities of Chicago and Philadelphia have issued health alerts warning of the drug medetomidine being mixed with fentanyl after an increase in overdoses.

According to the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH), medetomidine is more potent than xylazine, also a veterinary sedative that has made it into street narcotics labeled the “zombie drug.”

“Multiple associated drug samples from the West Side of Chicago tested positive for elevated levels of medetomidine,” the CDPH said. “Medetomidine has not previously been detected in Chicago, although it has recently been detected in Philadelphia. In Chicago, medetomidine has been detected in combination with fentanyl, heroin, xylazine, alprazolam and nitazenes.”

Medetomidine is similar to Precedex in humans and can cause respiratory depression, the CDPH said, adding that its effects can’t be reversed by Naloxone, a medication that restores breathing after an overdose.”
