SurvivalBlog presents another edition of The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods. This column is a collection of news bits and pieces that are relevant to the modern survivalist and prepper from JWR. Our goal is to educate our readers, to help them to recognize emerging threats, and to be better prepared for both disasters and negative societal trends. You can’t mitigate a risk if you haven’t first identified a risk. In today’s column, we further examine homesteading self-sufficiency.
Millennials are Giving Up City Life to Start Homesteading
This piece was published by the editors of Business Insider: Why millennials are giving up city life to start homesteading. A quote:
“Homesteading — or living self-sufficiently by doing things like growing and raising food and maybe even living off the electric grid or sewer system — has grown more popular since early 2020, according to the Homesteaders of America, an organization that advocates leading an independent, agrarian lifestyle.”

Hawaii Seeks Food Security, Self-Sufficiency
From KITV Island News: Increasing food security, self sufficiency an ongoing pursuit in Hawaii in 2024. The article begins:
“Striving to improve food security, the Hawai‘i Department of Agriculture (HDOA) and the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) are reportedly making progress in transferring state leases for agricultural and pastoral lands.
At Thursday’s press conference at the Hawaii State Capitol, Gov. Josh Green said, “The transfer of these leases, representing tens of thousands of acres, will help to further preserve important agricultural lands and support the state’s self-sufficiency.”
“As stewards of our islands’ precious land resources, we owe it to ourselves and our future generations to increase our ability to produce food locally, as well as to support all forms of agriculture,” Green added.
The Hawai‘i State Legislature passed Act 90 in 2003, which provides that certain agricultural lands with or without leases could be transferred over to the HDOA upon the approval of both the Board of Land and Natural Resources (BLNR) and the Hawai‘i Board of Agriculture (HBOA).”
JWR’s Comment: Top-down solutions from government “programs” only rarely succeed. Rather, it is bottom-up entrepreneurial investment and hard work that succeeds.

Update on the “Astroturf” Patriot Front
Linked over at the Whatfinger.com news aggregation site: If Patriot Front was actually a real organic white supremacy group, the media would be all over this story to expose every member and ruin their lives.
Also: What’s the deal with these Patriot Front guys’ vehicles? Their license plates are completely blank.
JWR’s Comments: I can think of no better examples of agent provocateurs in America’s recent history than the photo-ops of the so-called Patriot Front and January 6, 2021 Capitol building breach instigator Ray Epps. These poseurs do their best to look like “grassroots” protestors, but the odor of astroturf is distinctive. Beware!
