The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods:

SurvivalBlog presents another edition of The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods— a collection of news bits and pieces that are relevant to the modern survivalist and prepper from “HJL”. The public schools are making headlines again with their outrageous and immoral teachings. (And we are not talking about the latest fad of married female teachers having affairs with underage students here. Those incidents seem to be making daily headlines lately)

Cannibals!

Do you know who your neighbors are? One South African community is reeling after one man walked into the police station holding body parts and confessing to cannibalism with the statement “I’m tired of eating humans”. He was apparently part of a four man ring who would kill, cut up and serve the body parts. Through the course of the investigation, over 300 residents have confessed to knowing of the cannibalism and participating in it when they visited the man. There are allegations that the crime may be much larger as well. Thanks to W.W. for the link.

No Guilty Verdicts in Bundy Ranch Standoff Trial

Despite the defense having their hands tied while the government is under no such restrictions, there were no guilty verdicts returned by the Jury this week in the trials. some of the counts reached “not guilty” verdicts and the jury was deadlocked on the remaining counts. Judge Navaro has denied the defendants their rights to use the First and Second amendments in the trial and has stopped at least one of the defendants mid-testimony because obscure references to these fundamental rights. The judge is obviously working to avoid jury nullification. Thanks to B.B. for the link.

Second Amendment

SurvivalBlog reader H.L. sent in this article on night time concealed carry. Do you carry what you need for this scenario? Your needs as a concealed carry licensee are completely different than those of the police or military. We tend to base our equipment on what works for them, but how often will you be going room-to-room clearing a building? You are far more likely to face a punk in the street trying to rob you. When he runs, you are probably not going to follow. It’s worth a read.

Reader W.W. sent in this amusing article on the ubiquity of the AK47 as a true survival rifle. I have to admit, I’ve never seen them used a jumper cables for starting a car with a dead battery before, but as they say: “Necessity is the mother of invention.” I don’t think I’ll be trying that anytime soon.

Storing Electronics

PC Magazine has a good article on tips for storing vintage electronics. Note that “vintage does not mean vacuum tubes and tar sealed paper capacitors. There are a series of photos showing existing issues such as battery corrosion, damaged capacitors, degraded plastic and others along with some ideas to keep the damage to a minimum as you store them.

Reason #4056 to Leave Public School

The Rocklin Academy school board is facing angry parents over the actions of one of their teachers. The Teacher read several books to the students about a transgender student. It is important to note that Parents were given no warning that these books would be read to the children and it is also important to note that many teachers stood in support of the offending teacher. Do you really need another reason to engage in homeschooling your children? The public schools are not your friend. They are communist/socialist constructs designed to indoctrinate your children in the the ways that big brother decides. Thanks to DSV for the link.

Reader H.L. also sent this article in on the rising costs of private school. The average cost of private school tuition has grown at a rate that is higher than inflation over the past 20 years. She also notes :

“Seems to me that an intelligent parent, could quit work and live on one income (they live frugally) and home school and do a better job. I do not know for certain, but suspect that most private schools have been “infected” with Common Core and certainly progressive, anti-capitalist views by the professors”

Median Income by County

Reader P.S. sent in this interactive article and map that lists the median income of every U.S. county. There is nothing quite like a visual map to bring such detailed information to light and it will help you understand the community in which you live as well as acting as an information source if you are planning on relocating. There are many interesting facts when it is broken down like this.

News Tips:

Please send your news tips to HJL. (Either via e-mail of via our Contact form.) These are often especially relevant, because they come from folks who watch news that is important to them. Due to their diligence and focus, we benefit from fresh “on target” news. We often “get the scoop” on news that is most likely ignored (or reported late) by mainstream American news outlets. Thanks!

  1. It seems that some judges exercise withholding evidence as a means to win a trial for the State. I am a firm believer in a jurors right to not only cast a verdict on any trial, but to also cast a verdict on the law itself. Jury Nullification is a time honored practice in the USA, since and against crown rule when we were colonies to defeat tyranny. Jury Nullification still has a practical use today for the same reason’s.

  2. Could a jury actually declare a law unconstitutional or reprimand a judge for denying the defense the ability to present its case? I think the concept of jury nullification certainly includes this possibility. I’d love to see the look on the judge’s face the first time a jury tried this.
