The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods:

SurvivalBlog presents another edition of The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods— a collection of news bits and pieces that are relevant to the modern survivalist and prepper from “JWR”.  Today, we look at military contractor Check-Mate relocating to Florida. (See the final item in this column.)

‘Stop-and-Frisk’ for Firearms: Unconstitutional!

Some good news: The PA Supreme Court: Unconstitutional to ‘Stop-and-Frisk’ For Firearms. JWR’s Comment: Open carry or the mere sight of a firearm in a vehicle by the local gendarmes is not probable cause to suspect the commission of a crime. Nay, it is just evidence of that someone is exercising a primary right that pre-dates even the Second Amendment!

Palmetto’s $29 Sale on Stripped AR Lowers

Reader Ron S. wrote to mention that Palmetto State Armory is having a very short duration $29.99 sale on their standard “Safe-Fire”-marked stripped AR-15 lowers. (Search on SKU 1728, at their web site.) That sale ends at Noon, Eastern Time, today (4 June, 2019), so jump on it. If you have some extra dough, and if your local dealer charges a percentage, rather than a flat fee, then I suggest that you stock up on these, heavily!  You will thank yourself the next time that the price of stripped lowers spikes up to $200 each. Please be sure to use our Palmetto State Armory affiliate ordering link. That way, we’ll earn a small commission.

Prepping: The Math Backs Us Up!

The Surprisingly Solid Mathematical Case of the Tin Foil Hat Gun Prepper. (Kudos to G.P. for sending that link.) A brief introductory excerpt from teh lengthy article:

“As gun policy discussions unfold in the wake of mass shooter incidents, they routinely end in three buckets. There’s the “tyranny can never happen here” bucket, which the left has mostly abdicated in the wake of Trump winning after they called (and still call) him a tyrant. There’s the “you can’t fight the army with small arms” bucket, which is increasingly unsound given our ongoing decade-and-a-half war with Afghani tribal goat herders. And there’s the “what the hell do you need an AR-15 for anyway?” bucket, which, by its very language, eschews a fundamental lack of understanding of what those people are thinking. I am not a prepper. But I know a few. Some of the ones I do know are smart. They may not be doing as deep an analysis as I present here, on a mathematical level, but the smart ones are definitely doing it at a subconscious level. If you want to understand the perspectives of others, as everyone in my opinion should strive to do, then you would do well to read to the end of this article. To get where we’re going, we will need to discuss the general framework of disaster mathematics.”

Police to Use TSA-Style Scanners

Reader DSV sent this item: Police To Use TSA-Style Scanners To Spy On People In Public Places. JWR’s Comment: Let me know where I can get one of those “45MM” pistols. That should be great for stopping grizzly bears.

Is Camping World Going Bankrupt?

Here is a video with some troubling news: Camping World Bankrupt…?  JWR’s Comments: If their assertion is true, then this could have some serious repercussions for anyone who bought a Camping World Extended Warranty. And if the company does indeed go Tango Uniform, then there might be an opportunity for folks who live off grid to attend Going Out Of Business sales and buying some 12 VDC appliances and gadgets, at deeply-discounted prices.  Stay tuned.

Public Health Breakdown in L.A.

Reader Tim J. spotted this: Dr. Drew says LA public health in ‘complete breakdown’: ‘No city on Earth tolerates this’

China Doubling Nuclear Warhead Arsenal

Reader G.P. sent this from over at Free Beacon: DIA: China Doubling Nuclear Warhead Arsenal. Here is a snippet for you:

“China is rapidly expanding its nuclear forces with new missiles, submarines, and bombers and will double its warhead stockpile in the coming decade, the director of the Defense Intelligence Agency said this week.

DIA director Army Lt. Gen. Robert P. Ashley also said in a speech Wednesday that Russia is building large numbers of tactical nuclear weapons in addition to new strategic weapons, including an earth-penetrating nuclear warhead similar to a weapon canceled by the United States years ago under pressure from anti-nuclear activists in Congress.”

Check-Mate Relocating to Georgia

A hat tip to Tim J. for spotting a Georgia news story. It is about yet another company in the firearms industry that is voting with their feet to relocate to a gun-friendly state: Check-mate Industries excited to expand their business in Thomasville. Some background: Check-mate has been a U.S. military contractor for full mil-spec M14 and Beretta M9 magazines for many years. Parenthetically, I should mention that many of my friends who own M1A rifles actually prefer Check-Mate-marked G.I. contract M14 magazines (marked: C.M.I.), and that two of these gents use them exclusively. I believe that Check-mate would be well-qualified as a Second Source contractor for M17 (SIG P320) magazines, as well!

You can send your news tips to JWR. (Either via e-mail of via our Contact form.) Thanks!

  1. Palmetto’s been offering $29.99 lowers plus $9 shipping per each off and on for the past couple weeks. Great deal, especially considering that they’re made by Aero Precision.

Note however that only some of the lowers are low shelf, depending on version. The standard PSA safe/fire are high shelf. The M4A1 lowers they have right now for $50 (still a bargin) are supposedly low shelf — but I don’t own one.

That said, all should be fully drilled for the grip screw, which allows for this super cheap mil-spec trigger mod @ 9-18 cents per rifle. Personally, I went w/ the 50 pack of stainless screws for the same price as the 100 carbon. First option under “customers also viewed” — “Primeonly27 1/4″-28 x 1/4″ Hex Drive Cup Point Grade 18-8 Stainless Steel Socket Set Screw 50 pack
Primeonly27 1/4″-28 x 1/4″ Hex Drive Cup Point Grade 18-8 Stainless Steel Socket Set Screw 50 pack”

Learn about the mod here: http://www.thenewrifleman.com/a-trigger-tune-up-for-every-man-in-your-platoon/

Most should also be drilled for the upper and lower tension tightening screw as well which eliminates the need to purchase an accuwedge to remove most to all upper and lower receiver wobble. Would need to buy that polymer tipped tensioning screw from Aero though.

    1. math prep, great article, i think the news totally overlooks the modern day slave trade mentioned in the article. Which this type of abuse results from collapsed government, in such an event expect that and sexual bondage evidenced by ISIS takeover of Syria and Iraq..

    2. We are already in the “zombie” apocalypse scenario – so many are brainlessly wandering looking into “smart” phones making us all dumber by the day reinforced by an educational system that abhors cognitive thinking (think maoist china – can play Vivaldi on violin better than any other Westerner, but to actually compose something, not so much…).

Example: a few years back during a hurricane event here in God-forsaken nj, I observed lines and lines at the gas station of people waiting to fill their gas cans – a bunch of zombies – all looking helpless for that liquid flammable nectar. I can go on and on, but you get the point.

i never was a Boys Scout, but I try to live by their motto – “BE PREPARED”.

  2. Yup, the Math/Prep article was very interesting. Seems like the pressure in the balloon is building to a popping point in our society.

MAGA= Mobile Asymmetrical Guerilla Army aka “The Deplorables “

  3. Prepper Math was great. Somehow it made me think of Amazon ratings and various recommendations to buy. Especially an item that has received 4 out of
    5 stars.

I did that one time about prepper items and discovered that that 4 out of 5 stars meant something more than that. I would add up the unhappy ratings together – that is the 5 star ratings with the 4 star ratings plus half the 3 star ratings and was surprised to find that about 18-25% of folks purchasing an item were unhappy with it and advised against buying. Zeroing in on the reasons why I’d often discover a problem with the item among a lot of people. The result? I’d pass on such a high chance of getting the same problem with time wasted and issues sending back.

And yet I still see recommendations to buy something with 4 out of 5 stars and yet often it has a large number of (usually similar) complaints as if the person recommending it had never spent 10 seconds looking at what percentage of ratings were really poor.

If 1out of 4 people have a problem with an item why would anybody take a chance.
Anyway, great article. A real keeper.

  4. I’m not sure I would call Georgia a “gun-friendly state”. It came within an inch of electing a communist flag burner by the name of Stacey Abrams as Governor. Before running for Governor she sponsored and introduced numerous anti 2nd Amendment bills in the general assembly. Many are praying the state doesn’t flip in the 2020 election.
