Armed and Dangerous

Eric Raymond, of the Armed & Dangerous blog, penned a quite plausible followup to JWR’s recent essay on The Mathematics of Countering Tyranny. The author starts with the numbers JWR derived and uses them to further calculate the difficulties the United States government would have in disarming the American gun owner. From a gun rights perspective, the numbers are very encouraging and only require a fraction of gun owners who are willing to fight for their rights to bring the entire forced collection program to a halt. The American Revolution was essentially kicked off by a gun confiscation order. It would be wise for the would-be gun grabbers to remember that.

Oppose S.2470

The Firearms Policy Coalition live streamed a program on the Senate Bill 2470, a bi-partisan bill in the U.S. Senate that is designed to prohibit those who are 18 to 20 years old from purchasing “assault weapons”, “high-capacity” magazines and ammunition. At 18, you are legally responsible for your own actions and you can be sent halfway around the world, handed a real assault weapon to defend your country, yet here at home you wouldn’t have the ability to purchase a semi-automatic rifle and the ammunition for it. Call and write your senator today to stop this travesty from trampling all over your civil rights.

AR in .338 Lapua Magnum!

I noticed that DRD Tactical (one of the long-term prize donors for our bi-monthly writing contest) now offers an AR chambered in .338 Lapua Magnum! They call it the Kivaari. Be sure to check it out. If you want the ultimate in a long range shooting rifle that is still comfortably portable, then this is it!

Health

According to this article sent in by reader DSV, Google is training machines to predict when a patient will die. While it is not uncommon for hospitals to triage patients, what makes this AI different is it’s ability to analyze far more data. While the article spins this in a positive light, suggesting that by letting the computer make the decision, hospital staff can spend far more time on patient care rather than sifting through paperwork, we know that the reality will be different. I personally know people who the hospital staff had declared as a loss and no doctor would touch them. The hospital keeps track of how many patients die on any doctors watch. A declaration like this will ensure that the patient will not receive the care they should have. Add that to socialized medicine and you have a recipe for disaster.

Public School Disaster

Reader H.L. sent in this article profiling how the schools in the District of Columbia have fallen from what was considered a point of pride to a huge embarrassment. At one point, the schools were hailed as a shining example of school reform. They were also promoted as a template for districts across the country. Now, a decade after restructuring and falling directly under the purview of the mayor,m an investigation by a local NPR station has revealed problems that had been swept under the rug.

About half of the graduates had missed more than three months of school. This number  should have kept them from graduating. With teachers salaries tied to the graduation rate, it would appear that teachers merely passed the children along, whether they knew the subject matter or not. The official attendance record was altered over 4000 times to change absences. Even the FBI is now investigating the administration.

Please send your news tips to HJL. (Either via e-mail of via our Contact form.) These are often especially relevant, because they come from folks who watch news that is important to them. Due to their diligence and focus, we benefit from fresh “on target” news. We often “get the scoop” on news that is most likely ignored (or reported late) by mainstream American news outlets. Thanks!

  1. Regarding “Health”, nothing new, hospitals like doctors who do not want someone dying on their watch due to the attached stigma will try and send the patient to another hospital or send them home. Another reason for hospice home care. While this route is not easy, emotionally, time wise, for the caregiver it gives some dignity to the palliative patient and emphasizes basic family values.

Parallel this with home schooling, self reliance, etc..

  2. I know of a couple of instances lately where hospitals concluded that a patient had less than a 50% chance of survival, so attempted to send them to hospice and provide no treatment other than perhaps pain medication. It appears that even a 45% chance of survival is a death sentence. That’s what you get when you apply only cold statistics.
