The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods:

SurvivalBlog presents another edition of The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods— a collection of news bits and pieces that are relevant to the modern survivalist and prepper from “HJL”. With the conclusion of our article on patrolling today, we are also excited about Max Alexander’s new tactical manual.

New Tactical Manual

Max has released his new Tactical Manual. This small tactics manual is the result of more than a quarter century of experience at the highest professional levels. Based on real-world deployments to multiple conflict zones spanning pre-9/11 and the current Global War on Terror. The contents are combat proven and time tested for light infantry, special operations and paramilitary deployments. Max based this manual on a number of sources including the U.S. and British Army doctrine and added his own “lessons learned”. If your looking for a source to compliment your small groups abilities in this area, you need to check this manual out.

Improve Your Tracking Skills

Keven from onPoint Tactical released a short document that helps you improve your tracking skills. Every so often, you will find yourself in need of tracking someone or something. A few years ago, my own mom began to suffer from an Alzheimers related illness and several times I received calls from my father to help find her when she had wondered away from home. Basic tracking skills that I had learned in Boy Scouts helped me find her on quite a few of those times. Like other skills, tracking is a perishable skill. If you don’t practice it regularly, you start losing it. You may remember the basics, but you will not be as quick about it as you want. This document will provide you will some basic drills to help keep those skills sharp.

Anti-Gun Protest

On Wednesday, New York City students participated in a “die-in” – an anti-gun protest supposedly in support of the victims of gun related violence across the nation. In classic style, governor Cuomo attended the protest, even speaking to the students. Remember that the focus of this protest is to disarm people. Cuomo brought his armed entourage for security while he attended. I guess guns are OK for the elite, just not for you commoners and peons. This is the result of the failure of our public school systems. We apparently don’t teach the meaning of the Second amendment anymore. Thanks to DSV for the link.

Obama DOJ Removed 500,000 Names From NICS

A person might think that with the current anti-gun winds blowing through the main stream media that government would take violent felons seriously. Multiple bills are introduced into congress every year to expand the NICS background checks. Why is it then, that the Obama administration removed more than 500,000 names from this database. Upon questioning, the Justice Department clarified that the name drops were a result of the reclassification of people when they changed the legal definition of “fugitive from justice” to claim that it only pertains to those who crossed state lines. Thanks to G.P. for the link.

Landowners Fencing Off Water

New Mexico is no stranger to entire wars fought over water rights. In this semi-arid, high altitude desert, water is life. It comes as no suprise then that the water wars continue even today. The latest round includes the concept on who owns the water that crosses private land. In most states, an angler that is fishing can cross private land as long as he stays in the waterway. However, under a new rule, New Mexico is allowing private land owners to fence off what used to be public waterways. The next time you are rafting down a river in New Mexico, you might want to stay on the lookout for that barbed wire stretched across the river. There are actually good arguments on both sides of this conflict. Thanks to reader P.S. for the link.

Islam Spreading on the Taxpayers Dime

Reader L.G. sent in this article on how the religion of pieces is spreading across the United States and you, the taxpayer, are paying for it. Unlike our European neighbors, who are dealing with results of open border policies and the resulting Islamic immigration nightmare, the U.S. is dealing with a massive prison wave. In SuperMax style prisons, the conversion of violent offenders to this violent political ideology is rampant. Due to the current interpretation of U.S. law and the wrong classification of Islam as a religion rather than a violent ideology, this conversion of prisoners occurs (and is often encouraged) on your dime. In an effort to curb the violent tendencies of these prisoners, chaplains are allowed to minister to them and the Islamists take full advantage of this.

Norweigans Lose Semi-Automatics

Reader W.W. sent in this article on how, despite not being a member of the E.U. Norway is following their example on gun control. Some of the most courageous stories of World War II and it’s aftermath come out of Norway. These people stood their ground against overwhelming odds and inflicted such extensive damage to the Nazi and Soviet regimes that they retained their independence and the invaders limped back home. Despite this proud heritage and strong independent tendencies, they have caved to pressure and have now passed a law that requires citizens to scrap or export semi-automatic hunting rifles. Citizens have three years to remove the firearms. Which firearms are affected by the law is still somewhat unclear, but it is already known that Ruger’s Mini-14 is on the list.

Please send your news tips to HJL. (Either via e-mail of via our Contact form.) These are often especially relevant, because they come from folks who watch news that is important to them. Due to their diligence and focus, we benefit from fresh “on target” news. We often “get the scoop” on news that is most likely ignored (or reported late) by mainstream American news outlets. Thanks!

  1. I tell all my younger relatives to READ history, starting with the rise and fall of the Roman Empire. To turn off TV and awful movies, and LEARN. History is repeating itself. They would rather ignore me. Oh well! Sadly, someday when I am gone, they will remember the articles I sent, what I said, how and why to prepare, why to get armed. America is way too far in debt, and is a declining nation. We had our day, but the sun is setting. How anyone can allow themselves to be sitting ducks is beyond me. Thankfully, I had a tough Dad born in 1904, who KNEW and taught us how to be prepared, and my Mother was right with him. A self-made man who never owned a credit cash, worked hard all his life, paid cash for everything, and loved us dearly. A man that would have settled the Old West. Old Yankee to the core.

    1. What you are saying is SO true!
I’m not sure who it was, but there is a saying to the effect “Those who do not understand History are doomed to repeat it”
It is more true now than ever before…
      Stay frosty!

  2. Of course Norway must give up their semi-auto rifles. Anyone can see that there is an invasion underway in Europe and soon their will be a civil war and perhaps a genocide. Nothing harshes a invaders mellow like an armed citizenry. Gun confiscation must accelerate or freedom will have a chance to survive.

  3. American Citizens who favor keeping the present remains of the Constitution (and perhaps restoring all or part of that which has been eroded) are opposed by at least an equal number who despise the Constitutional remains, and favor the continuing, if piecemeal, erosion. Of the two groups, the latter is by far, the better organized and subsidized. Between those extremes, is a huge ignorant and apathetic majority who, at best, are prepared to deal with only a single incident at a time, lest it interfere with their acquisition and entertainment. Continuing to deteriorate under these conditions, America will have a hard time dealing with the coming Caliphate, of which, Europistan will be the armory/manufactory, if not the Capitol.

  4. An observation from a frog outside of the pot, are they teaching students of the Amendments and particularly that the 2nd Amendment is the only way to ensure the government is held accountable? All the students from Florida that were interviewed – not one raised the 2nd Amendment (could also be only selected interviews chosen).

The anti gun lobby keep using the Australian Gun Control Act as the shining light of sensible gun reform – believe me it is nothing of the sort. There are numerous arbitrary decisions and bans within the Act that have nothing to do with crime statistics or needs – rather an anti gun lobby who get as much free to air time on radio and tv as they want and presenters of various “news, current affairs and talkback” style shows all firmly behind disarmament. Any sensible movements towards rational discussions between shooters and legislators are screamed down by the gun control crowd, and survivors of the Port Arthur shooting are again trotted out 20 years after the shooting to elicit sympathy and apply pressure to politicians, not to “weaken” our “world standard gun control”.
Stay Strong and Fight for Your Rights.
