JWR’s Recommendations of the Week:

Here are JWR’s Recommendations of the Week for various media and tools of interest to SurvivalBlog readers. The focus is usually on emergency communications gear, bug out bag gear, books, and movies–often with a tie-in to disaster preparedness, and links to “how-to” self-sufficiency videos. There are also links to sources for both storage food and storage containers. You will also note an emphasis on history books and historical movies. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases. This week the focus is on a great David Lean film, starring Alec Guinness. It is no wonder that an anagram of his name is: Genuine Class. (See the Movies section.)

Featured Antique Gun of the Week

Our featured antique gun of the week is a scarce Remington Rolling Block .45-70 Saddle Ring Carbine. As part of our Pre-Election Sale, I recently reduced its price from $975 to $925. Like most other pre-1899 guns, it can be mailed directly to your doorstep without any paperwork or FFL dealer involvement. (Be sure to check your state and local laws before ordering.) Take a look at the many recently-added guns at the Elk Creek Company store.

  1. FYI, nobody uses ALWD. The standard guide is the Bluebook: A Uniform Guide to Legal Citations. Some state courts have their own manuals they prefer, but Bluebook is always a correct option.

  2. Just one thing to mention on things to store away- tubes of ShoeGoo. I bought several pairs of Eddie Bauer boots from Sam’s club at $30 a pair thinking they were a deal. Problem is the soles start delaminating form the shoe body in very short order. I have given some of the boots some very rough treatment after the liberal application of ShoeGoo and it normally makes them usable for a whole lot longer. Find ShoeGoo or some other similar cement. I recently used E6000 from Lowes, and I am sure available from others, as I couldn’t find Shoe Goo. So far so good but I can yet report on the longer term durability. Or maybe just find a better higher quality built boot.

    1. I have the same experience with my 5.11 ATAC boots, usually after a LOT of hard wear. I have used the E6000 and Shoe Goo adhesives, and the Shoe Goo seems to last longer on shoes. E6000 seems to work better for repairing plastic items. Both of them are wonderful adhesives for different uses!

      1. Combine both in a 2 part mix- keeps the of flexibility of the Goo with the strength/resilience of the 6k. (Running the old Converse duty boots till there’s no tread left!)

  3. Thank you for the piano video shorts and studio recordings of those 60s classics. I had not realized how much music has gone out of our lives during this pandemic until I felt the surge of joy to hear those voices and notes which move us all. I look forward to that day when we can start up our church choir again. To sing and to play music is to live, isn’t it? best, redclay7

  4. And there in lies the first problem, thinking that a $30.00 dollar pair of boot’s was a good deal, remember the old saying if it’s too good to be true……
Everything from Sam’s club comes from China and i don’t think they have your best interests in mind.
I myself value my feet highly as I depend on them to get me from point A to point B and perhaps back to point A again. Comfortable warm dry feet help make the journey much more enjoyable

    1. I have been wearing cheap Chinese shoes from Wallyworld for many years.
My BOOTS, however are high-quality American made ones. But this year, I bought some GOOD shoes from a real shoe store. They were over a hundred dollars, but they are made in USA and are SO MUCH BETTER. There is no comparison. No more junk Chinese shoes for me !

  5. Have y’all seen this? A document circulating detailing plans for election-time disruption. The actual document is linked in the second paragraph of this article:

    https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2020/10/12/read-left-wing-radicals-post-online-guide-to-disrupting-the-country-if-election-is-close/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+breitbart+%28Breitbart+News%29

I haven’t had time to read the entire document yet but the excerpts in this article are instructive enough.

Watch your backs. Stay out of crowds.

P.S. I have a family member who is moving across a couple states for work, from one college town to another, the weekend right before the election. She is absolutely brilliant, but her street smarts are, shall we say, lacking. She is a very kind person and therefore attributes the best of motivations to others, even when unwarranted. Because of the pandemic and the compromised immune systems of some members of our family, she isn’t letting any of us join her to help. If anyone would join me in praying for her safety…I’d be very grateful!

    1. Yes, Bear! Absolutely will pray for your family member in transition for safe passage, increased awareness and discernment. Always a privilege to lift another up to the Lord.

In fact we were having a conversation this evening on the heels of the disastrous revelations associated with Hunter Biden and Joe Biden. Reports are that social media is suppressing the sharing of reports about this, and the conversation we were having more broadly was about the response of radical leftists to a Trump victory in 2020. Will they try to negotiate their ways out of their current predicament (make nice) to try to skirt the possibility of prosecution (essentially hoping for some kind of political mercy), or will they go scorched earth. The general consensus among us was that the scorched earth strategy was much more likely. Of course when it comes to leftists, one simply cannot rule anything out!

      1. Telesilla of Argos, correct = “Of course when it comes to leftists, one simply cannot rule anything out!” = We know if Biden wins, Americans will lose their 2nd Amendment gun rights.
……… People might think, ‘there are too many guns to confiscate them all.’ … It’ll be a slow process of grinding-out the people with guns; many gun sale records are available.
… Think = SurvivalBlog ~ Elk Creek Company guns; especially if Biden wins.

Videos of Tucker Carlson are available for 10/14/2020.
The Last Refuge said this about the Tucker Carlson segment, “Fox News host Tucker Carlson used his megaphone tonight to outline the scale and scope of tech overlord manipulation in the 2020 election. Carlson also walks through the details of the explosive story that has sent the tech oligarchs into apoplectic fits of censorship.”

In another article today, on 10/14/2020, for The Last Refuge this was said by the editor of The Last Refuge, = “Everyone knew it would eventually happen and today is the day. In an effort to influence the 2020 U.S. election, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Twitter and the social media technocrats have crossed the Rubicon today and banned all sharing of the explosive information about Hunter and Joe Biden’s self-serving deals with Ukraine.”

“In an effort to stop evidence from surfacing showing candidate Joe Biden lied about his involvement with corrupt Ukraine business deals, Facebook and Twitter have openly deployed their activist technicians to generate algorithms blocking content sharing of The New York Post article(s). Additionally all users, including ~White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany are being removed from all platforms for sharing the story.”

      2. “Of course when it comes to leftists, one simply cannot rule anything out!”

No kidding, Telesilla! I’m sure you have seen where Judge Barrett used a term that was less than three weeks ago used by leftist leaders, seemingly the accepted verbiage, but she was told it was now offensive and THEN AFTERWARDS the publishers of the dictionary literally changed the definition to add that it is now offensive!!

“We’ve always been at war with Eastasia…”

        Logic has left the building.

(And then of course there is Judge Barrett. Supremely unflappable, but then of course she is. She is our tribe – a special needs mama! 😀 )

  6. Mr. Rawles, if you don’t mind me asking, how long has your family been using that food strainer? And do you have any criticisms of it? I have an OMAC Gulliver like this:
    https://www.amazon.com/Gulliver-6560-Omac-Tomato-Strainer/dp/B003GWF49Q/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8
I have been very happy with it, especially since it was purchased used for $30, but I am looking for something a little more versatile, and I have looked at the one you recommended, but would love to hear a comment on it’s durability.

And thanks for the recommendation for “The Theft of America’s Soul” I found it to be an excellent read that more people should put on their bookshelf!

    1. We use our Visctorio primarily for making tomato sauce and applesauce. It is a very durable and versatile tool. It is the set of screens with various apertures that makes it so versatile. We’ve had ours since 1991, and it is still going strong.

      1. I also have used the excellent Victorio strainer for at least twenty years. For smaller jobs I have discovered the OXO food mill as an excellent substitute. (I am Italian and always make sauce from scratch).

I rarely purchase a “made in China” item but the OXO was a gift and is of excellent quality.

    2. I agree with wwes about Rod Dreher’s book,

Here is another, mercifully short, book you might look for.

Arms and Empire: Imperial Patterns Before World War II
      by Richard. Krooth

      Carry on

  7. speaking of music, please go to youtube and lookup Gerald Wolfs 30 minute gospel music hymn sing. there are two videos, one was taped in Tennessee and i cannot recall where the other was taped at. this kind of singing is not found in many church’s nowadays. it will lift your spirit and you might find yourself singing along. i know both videos have been a blessing to my wife and i.

  8. The NC Scout Interview above is a fascinating as well as disturbing synopsis of the forces aligned against the U.S. Constitution and its adherents.

I highly recommend listening to the entire interview.

    Know thy enemy.

  9. I wouldn’t bother with citations unless you’re planning on writing a brief for the Court.
I suggest finding access to the local state statutes and Court rules and reading them. Our local public library has electronic access to the federal and state laws as well as to Court cases.
Generally, big firms use Westlaw but there are other programs that will do most of what you want to know – something like Casemaker or FastCase. You want to read the statute and then see if any Court has interpreted it.
And be careful of applying your pet theory to a law. I sometimes see individuals filing dozens and dozens of pages of documents on things that are not part of the way things work today. I’ve even seen a couple of people told they cannot file any more documents without the Judge’s okay because the documents have nothing to do with the legal matters, just the same stuff with multiple variations on this person’s pet ideas, and they are simply clogging the Court file with
A saying is that an attorney who represents himself has a fool for a client, so be cautious if you decide to represent yourself and be sure you know what the rules are, or you can easily lose whatever you’re involved with based on technicalities. Rules are very important in law. If the rule is 10 days notice, 8 days won’t do. If it’s 1 page, then don’t submit 5.
I’m licensed and have practiced law in two states, in a few subject areas, but knew only enough criminal law to pass each state’s bar exam (3 days of essay responses to absurd fact situations – no multiple choice tests given back when I took bar exams).
Lawyers tend to work in certain areas; so don’t expect your defense lawyer neighbor to help with setting up a limited liability company or your Uncle Joe, who only does oil and gas law, to help with establishing a trust for you. just as I know nothing about criminal law because I’m not interested in it and don’t practice in that area. Laws are always changing so it’s important to know what’s current.
    Be cautious. Have fun.
