“Little else is requisite to carry a state to the highest degree of opulence from the lowest barbarism, but peace, easy taxes and a tolerable administration of justice” – Adam Smith

  1. I would say that years of light hurricane activity and a “rabid” real estate market in Houston conspired to put a lot of homes and apartments on land that could logically be expected to be under 10 feet of water in the event of a hurricane. How does this happen? Have the cites abandoned all common sense? What purpose does the government serve with the regulations and fees to build presumably intended to insure safe dwellings if not to prevent this from being a disaster.

I could say the same for New Orleans. Why in god’s name did we rebuild New Orleans after being handed a perfect excuse and opportunity to physically move the city to higher ground? Are humans too stupid to evolve?

  2. New Orleans was rebuilt? A lot of money was thrown at the garden districtand french quarter but the rest of the city was left a wasteland last time I saw it(urban reclamation for the wealthy, waiting for condo developers and socal crapshack style hit and run artists to pick up cheap)
