Editors’ Prepping Progress

To be prepared for a crisis, every Prepper must establish goals and make both long-term and short-term plans. In this column, the SurvivalBlog editors review their week’s prep activities and planned prep activities for the coming week. These range from healthcare and gear purchases to gardening, ranch improvements, bug-out bag fine-tuning, and food storage. This is something akin to our Retreat Owner Profiles, but written incrementally and in detail, throughout the year.  We always welcome you to share your own successes and wisdom in your e-mailed letters. We post many of those — or excerpts thereof — in the Odds ‘n Sods Column or in the Snippets column. Let’s keep busy and be ready!

Jim Reports:

After last week’s Redneck Pool cleaning project, I got the last of the garden hoses stowed away in our shop for the winter.  The stock tanks are in position. I just need to test the stock tank heaters. Those are notoriously finicky–especially the floating variety.

We took a trip down to Sandpoint, Idaho to do some shopping.  We mainly needed groceries and some bits and bobs from Home Depot.

Now, Lily’s part of the report…

Avalanche Lily Reports:

Dear Readers,
This week the weather was cloudy and rainy the whole week with temperatures lows in the high thirties up to 45 degrees Fahrenheit.

Time is just flying by. It was a rather quiet week.

On Monday it was raining, and we went shopping in town.

On Tuesday, we had intermittent rain showers.  I spent the whole day cleaning out the cow stalls.  Jim and I wheelbarrowed the manure down to the orchard and spread it around our fruit trees.  I then cleaned the area of the barn in front of the hay bales where the chickens brought down all of the loose hay. It had matted pile two to three inches thick.  I used a pitchfork and piled seven wheelbarrow loads that went on a compost pile. That portion will be spread in the Main garden next spring. Then I cleaned up the loafing area between the barn and the shed.

I cleaned the Hen house.  That manure also went to the orchard and was spread around fruit trees.

On Wednesday It was pouring rain all-the-live-long-day.  I did my animal chores in the early morning, then went to take care of our neighbor’s animals as they had to be away from home for some time. Then I vacuumed and washed floors in our home, did dishes, and ran a couple of loads of laundry.  I was tired from the hard work from the day before, so I vegged out the rest of the day until chore time.

Thursday and Friday we traveled to southwestern Washington towing our horse trailer, to pick up some new critters to add to our ranch’s menagerie.

That was our week.  I did some walking.  I spent time in deep prayer several times this week as there have been some serious needs among our friends, family, and acquaintances.

May You All Remain Safe, Blessed, and Hidden in Christ Jesus,

– Avalanche Lily, Rawles
