Here are the latest items and commentary on current economics news, market trends, stocks, investing opportunities, and the precious metals markets. We also cover hedges, derivatives, and obscura. And it bears mention that most of these items are from the “tangibles heavy” contrarian perspective of JWR. (SurvivalBlog’s Founder and Senior Editor.) Today’s focus is on investing in ammunition. Tangibles Investing (Ammunition):
The recent post-election dip in gun, magazine, and ammunition prices have created a proverbial Buyer’s Market. This is a good time to stock up. My advice is to watch for super deep discounts, close-out sales, and a even business closing sales and auctions. (Yes, there will be a few, for a few storefront gun dealers that were too heavily debt-leveraged.)
Just don’t go hog wild and buy ammunition that you, your children, and your grandchildren will never use. Stick to buying the most common calibers. And of course store everything in waterproof containers. (Mil-Surp ammo cans with gasketed lids are best, but large Tupperware containers found at yard sales and thrift stores also work just fine with all but the heaviest varieties of ammo.)
The current dip in prices will probably last just a few months. Take full advantage of it, to “Buy low and sell high.” For now, continue to stack your ammo deep!

News Tips:
Please send your economics and investing news tips to JWR. (Either via e-mail of via our Contact form.) These are often especially relevant, because they come from folks who particularly watch individual markets. And due to their diligence and focus, we benefit from fresh “on target” investing news. We often “gets the scoop” on economic and investing news that is probably ignored (or reported late) by mainstream American news outlets. Thanks!
I have a gun show hitting this coming Saturday and a friend of mine and I always make a day of it when they happen. We start at 9:00 AM when the doors open and normally get out between 2:00 to 3:00 PM. If we do not invest in actual guns we always invest in ammo. I like building up supplies of 9mm, 223/5.56, .45, and .22 long rifle as the most common. I still buy some .40, 38 Special, and .357, but not as much as the others. I think I mainly started this after the ammo scare a few years back where I was hard pressed to find ammo for the range so I told myself I’d never be caught off guard like this again. Even though I’ve built up a personal supply I have more than enough that these can be barter items if needed.
I am enjoying the low prices on magazines more than anything right now. Topping off my collection (I shoot for 10 mags per firearm) and barter stick is very affordable right now. Gunmagwarehouse.com (who is a site sponsor I believe) had pmags @$7.50 a piece yesterday if you bought 10. Also topped off my BX-25’s for $20 a piece a week or 2 ago. I have no affiliation with that site beyond being a satisfied customer. But I still can’t find Ruger P95 mags for what I consider a reasonable price anywhere….
Jason, you’re right on the P95 mags. The last set I bought I ordered from either Brownells or Midway at $20 each for the 15 round mags. I was getting them regularly at gun shows for as little as $10.00 a few years ago. The last show I found two 10 round mags and the guy wanted $25 for each one. I tried to talk him down to $15 each and then I even went up to retail at $20 each and he would not budge on his price so I left them with him. I’m just glad I have about 10 of these right now, but I’d like another 10. I have so many Pmags that the last seven I’ve bought are sitting on top of my gun safe still in the wrapper, but at $7.50 that is a tempting price to get more. I like the BX-25 price too. I’ll see what the gun show yields before I do any ordering. Thanks for the source. I’ll check them out.
For ammo storage cans I’ve seen cans that aren’t actual surplus but are look alikes in all respects including having a gasket seal on the lid. A local farm store had them in their surplus and had the smaller ones for $2 apiece. I purchased a couple of nested ‘3-packs’ for $12 each. I haven’t tried them yet and was wondering if others have used them for ammo storage and how well they worked.
This is for zelmer.
I have used these nesting cans in which you speak and tested them and I haven’t noticed much difference between them and the used surplus cans.
