Economics & Investing For Preppers

Here are the latest items and commentary on current economics news, market trends, stocks, investing opportunities, and the precious metals markets. We also cover hedges, derivatives, and obscura. And it bears mention that most of these items are from the “tangibles heavy” contrarian perspective of JWR. (SurvivalBlog’s Founder and Senior Editor.) Today’s focus is on the economic implications of the Eddy Grand Solar Minimum. (See the Economy & Finance section.)

Economy & Finance (Grand Solar Minimum):

I view the currently developing Eddy Grand Solar Minimum with genuine dread. An extended solar minimum is far from a certainty. But if it does occur, the economic implications for the next two decades would be enormous. History has shown that repeated crop failures lead to market failures, and then currency failures, massive riots, and sundry wars. This could very easily trigger a long-duration global economic depression.

My recommendation: Stock up, especially on rice and small grains, while they are still available at reasonable basic commodity prices. All that it will take is one year of near failure of a crop to cause a huge jump in some food prices. And if the Generally Dumb Public (GDP) wakes up about this possibility then all of the long term storage food packagers will sell out and develop very long order backlogs.

News Tips:

Please send your economics and investing news tips to JWR. (Either via e-mail of via our Contact form.) These are often especially relevant, because they come from folks who particularly watch individual markets. And due to their diligence and focus, we benefit from fresh “on target” investing news. We often “get the scoop” on economic and investing news that is probably ignored (or reported late) by mainstream American news outlets. Thanks!

  1. Vermont? Isn’t that the “home” of “Feel The Burn” Sanders? And didn’t they recently pass a gun control law, against all “common sense”?
What are the tax laws, and cost of living like there?
This sounds like what New Yawk attempted a couple of years ago, to make a “tax free” or “low tax” zone to entice businesses to move there. Except that it would be for a limited number of years, and then the company would be hit with the full force of New Yawk taxes. If I remember correctly, I don’t think anyone took Cuomo’s bait.

  2. Re Solar Minimum: Am I getting this right, about 30 scientist/studies in recent years have predicted less solar activity resulting in significant COOLING temperatures in the future????? About 30+ years ago popular culture was predicting a new Ice Age; then apparently Al Gore and others decided “Global Warming” would be more profitable. Why were these scientist so quiet, lost their ability to speak or just their integrity?

  3. The Vermont scheme would be funny if it wasn’t so sad. Taxes are quite high and people are leaving because it is trying to beat out California as a socialist’s paradise. They will pay you $5000 a year for two years IF you move there with a telecommuting job from another state. This is supposed to bring in income taxes from employers in other states. Good luck with that.
