Economics & Investing For Preppers

Here are the latest items and commentary on current economics news, market trends, stocks, investing opportunities, and the precious metals markets. We also cover hedges, derivatives, and obscura. And it bears mention that most of these items are from the “tangibles heavy” contrarian perspective of JWR. (SurvivalBlog’s Founder and Senior Editor.) Today’s focus is on Winchester Rifles.  (See the Tangibles Investing section, near the end of this column.)

Precious Metals:

Sprott Gold Report: Gold Resilient Despite Market Volatility

Credit Card News:

Citibank has shown its true anti-gun colors. It is high time for American gun owners to cancel their Citibank credit cards and to close their Citibank accounts. For maximum effect, I recommend cutting your Citibank card in half, and mailing the left half of it to Citbank with a terse (but polite) “nastygram” letter explaining why you are closing your accounts. Mail them to: Citibank, Attn: President James A. Forese, 99 Park Ave., New York, NY10022

Stocks:

Dow drops 345 points as tech stocks get crushed. (“The worst week for the three major indices in nearly two years.”)

Tangibles Investing (Winchester Rifles):

One proven reliable tangible investment for Americans is Winchester brand rifles. For preppers, I recommend concentrating on controlled feed (large extractor) stainless steel Model 70 rifles that are chambered in common calibers such as .270, .308, .30-06 and perhaps .243 Winchester. If you aren’t worried about weather resistance, then nothing beats unaltered pre-1964  Winchester Model 70s that are still in fine condition.

If you are looking for an investment piece, then never buy a pre-’64 Winchester that has had its stock cut for a recoil pad.  And if you want  maximum potential gain in value, then concentrate on minty pre-1899 production (legally antique) Winchester lever action rifles and carbine that have never been reblued or altered in any way. And finding those with any special order features makes them even more attractive. Lastly, consider that a “factory letter” that confirms that the rifle is still in its originally-shipped caliber and configuration is also very important.

News Tips:

Please send your economics and investing news tips to JWR. (Either via e-mail of via our Contact form.) These are often especially relevant, because they come from folks who particularly watch individual markets. And due to their diligence and focus, we benefit from fresh “on target” investing news. We often “get the scoop” on economic and investing news that is probably ignored (or reported late) by mainstream American news outlets. Thanks!

  1. I not only cancelled my CitiBank card but also my Sears account since they were associated with them, telling both why I did so. It gets frustrating feeling like you can’t do anything about the corruption or hypocrisy so every little victory of a pushback helps.

  2. I bought a Win Mod 94 during the last year they were made. Winchester quality is so bad that I am convinced their quality control is non existent. The butt plate screw holes were over drilled and one over sized so much that the threads would not touch the wood. The screw was just placed in the hole. The cartridge inlet plate was so difficult to depress that I could not do so with my own thumb let alone a cartridge. When held in the hand at the grip i could watch and feel the weapon physically move out of alignment when moved side to side. Front sight was off center. It took me 6 weeks to apply the fixes and when I sold it at a great loss I explained to the fella what the problems were and how I repaired it. No quest about it- Winchester makes junk.
I am a Henry man now.

  3. Maximum effect? Want to make sure that CEO laughs so hard he has a stroke? That’s an interesting strategy.

For those of you who don’t know, ALL the major banks of the free world take their orders from the same criminal cabal of bankers.

  4. Everyone that is not using CITI should call there Banks/ Credit Card companies and tell them not to follow CITI. I called mine and Thanked them for not getting involved in politics and not jumping on the bandwagon.

  5. A better way to impact Citi is use your credit card for a minimal purchase and then pay it off plus one dollar. They will send you a statement, probably for three months showing a credit balance, then mail you a check to clear your account. They will send you another statement showing a zero balance. The next month you start the process again.

The cost of the statements and the check far outweigh their earnings on a minimal purchase.
