Skin Deep

SurvivalBlog Reader D.S. sent in this comment on the UK’s moral failure concerning Asia Bibi (The Pakistani Christian woman who spent 8 years on death row for her faith).

In Britain, both moral outrage and Christian faith have become shallow. Their cultural dilution is in part due to their former empire, in part due to current PC attitudes which preclude favoring historical and traditional values, and both are magnified by the Euro-Central-globalism of the recent generation. The treatment of ‘Tommy Robinson’ shows the depth of the rot in courts and Parliament.

This epic failure of their refusal to offer Asia Bibi asylum demonstrates the governmental fear of the enemy within.

Police Officer Stabbed

As one astute SurvivalBlog commenter noted recently, It’s not just the radical Islamists that are the problem. Islam is a political ideology masquerading as a religion. A SurvivalBlog reader sent in this article on the trial of one attempted police murderer. The perpetrator stabbed the police officer while shouting the usual murderous scream (something about their demon god is great or something like that.) During the trial, the only remorse shown by the person was when he found out that the man he stabbed didn’t die. This brought tears to his face. He cried because his mission was a failure. He also noted that the reason for his attack was because of the U.S. government’s support for Israel.

Red Flag Confiscations

Baltimore police officers were serving a red flag warrant on Gary Willis, a 60 year old man. For those unfamiliar with the term “red flag warrant”, this is where a person has a “gun violence restraining order” placed on them because of some complaint by a third party. These warrants are issued for the temporary confiscation of all firearms and the accused party does not have an opportunity to be represented at the hearing where the warrant is issued. In effect, their Constitutional due process is violated by the government. During the serving of the warrant, Baltimore police say that he picked up one of his firearms and they struggled with him while attempting to remove the gun.

At some point, the gun fired and the police proceeded to fatally shoot Willis. The law of unintended consequences will continue to be felt and we can expect many more violent confrontations as more of these unconstitutional laws are enacted across the country. We can probably expect that some police officers will eventually be killed as well as more victims. Thanks to DSV for the link.

Concealed Carry

Michael Z. Williamson, SurvivalBlog’s Editor at Large, noted that another potential mass murder was stopped before police even arrived. Back in October, a man entered a Kroger grocery store in Jeffersontown, Kentucky and opened fire on innocent people. The suspect was a prohibited possessor who had a mental illness, paranoid schizophrenia. He’s been convicted of domestic violence against his parents and his wife. During the rampage which was also outside the store, several citizens with a concealed carry permit encountered him and engaged him. Of course, there is little media coverage of this shooting because it was armed citizens who stopped it. Note that both citizens acted with excellent restraint and discipline.

Thoughts on Medicine

I have not had a chance to review all of your survival medicine articles, but as a former nurse, I thought I’d throw in a few tidbits in case they haven’t been covered anywhere.

Tylenol is a good antipyretic and analgesic, but it comes with a cost. Too much of a good thing isn’t good. Maximum daily dose is 4000 mg (that would be 8 Tylenol ES) . Beyond that dose, liver damage will start. I’m sure a lot of folks have some Vicodin or Vicodin variants laid by. The label will usually read Hydrocodone/APAP and some mass of each, respectively, to wit Hydrocodone/APAP 5/325 – that’s 5mg hydrocodone and 325 mg APAP (acetaminophen/Tylenol). If all someone has in their larder is Vicodin, and the patient is still in pain even when the max daily dose of APAP has been reached, they’re going to have to deal with the pain.

Next, quinolone antibiotics (Cipro and Levaquin, or the generic equivalents ciprofloxacin and levofloxacin). When indicated for a given pathogen, there are few other ABX that will do what these can do. But be warned, quinolones are linked to permanent connective tissue damage, particularly tendons and ligaments. People taking these drugs should avoid any strenuous activity while on them, and should take “baby steps” on exertion after the course of treatment is done. Quinolones have been linked to tendon rupture. In a survival situation, this would be death, I expect, or at best, a less-than-useful dependent mouth to have to feed and defend.

Last, some words on nausea and vomiting (N/V). All old schools antihistamines which fall under the class H1 receptor antagonists will work for nausea and vomiting. Phenergan/promethazine started it’s medical life as an antihistamine, and they soon discovered it was terrific for treating N/V. Benadryl, scopalamine, et al are also good for treating N/V. If someone has already started vomiting, those drugs can (and should be at that point) all be taken as suppositories.

Making Your Own Antibiotics

While on the subject of health, reader S.G. sent in this article on making your own antibiotics. Obviously this comes with a warning. This article is for informational purposes only. Don’t depend on things like this while you have quality medical care available to you. This is can be dangerous as some molds are toxic and without proper test equipment you’re never really sure what you have.

SurvivalBlog Classifieds

The SurvivalBlog Classifieds are doing well. JWR noted that quite a few of his listings have sold and we continue to see really neat things advertised there. If you are currently running a classified, make sure you have your item priced right so that both the seller and the buyer can walk away from the deal feeling good. Drop the price if necessary. I recently dropped the price of the IC-7000 HF radio kit I have listed there and noticed that right below my listing is one for a multi-band antenna. With the two of those listings, you have everything you need to get on the air.

I also noted a couple of other short distance communications radios that are worth noting: A 2-meter/10-meter KLM Multi-2700 and a Kenwood TR-9130 2-meter that would make excellent base station radios.
