Here is SurvivalBlog’s News From The American Redoubt. This weekly column features news stories and event announcements from around the American Redoubt region. We also mention companies of interest to preppers that are located in the region. The emphasis this week is on the economic contribution of the Columbia River Basin. Combined, the dams in the region provide more than 40% of U.S. hydroelectric generation.
Idaho (Columbia River Basin)
One of the nation’s furthest-inland seaports west of the Mississippi River is the city of Lewiston, Idaho. It is Idaho’s only seaport. Located at the confluence of the Snake River and Clearwater River, and connecting to the mighty Columbia River, Lewiston is considered a secondary seaport city. It can be reached by seagoing barges, but most of the barge traffic is river or coastal barges that carry wood chips, wood pulp, and grain down to Portland, Oregon. There, this cargo is typically trans-shipped into large seaworthy cargo vessels.
According to Wikipedia: “Lewiston’s main industries are agriculture, paper and timber products production at the mill owned and operated by the Clearwater Paper Corporation (until December 2008, a part of the Potlatch Corporation), and light manufacturing.” Wikipedia also notes: “Ammunition maker CCI, and Speer Bullet (both now brands of Vista Outdoor) are headquartered in Lewiston and Howell Munitions & Technology has a plant in the city as well.”

Dubbed “The Eighth Wonder of the World” when it was completed in 1941, the Grand Coulee Dam on the upper Columbia River is still an economic powerhouse unto itself. It holds back Lake Roosevelt, which has a 600 mile-long shoreline and a capacity of 9,386,000 acre-feet. Grand Coulee is the nation’s largest hydroelectric dam, and produces 21 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity per year. That enormous supply of inexpensive power has been crucial for the aluminum industry since World War II. Today, that same stable, abundant, and inexpensive power has become important for for data centers, server farms, and cryptocurrency mining operations.

It is my understanding that FL Gov. Rick Scott has a lodge and acreage in the American Redoubt and a private jet to get there.
So, if the going gets tough in this country, he may be out there to help lead you folks through uncertain times.
I would encourage folks to use the 1st Amendment to express your thoughts on gun control and his actions as Governor, to him, in a polite, civil, and respectful manner, if you happen to run into him.
His term ends at the end of the year, and he would like to represent FL in the U.S. Senate, but I don’t think that is going to happen now.
He may end up in one of PDJT’s revolving cabinet positions, probably a bad thing for gun rights advocates.

There are other politicians, bureaucrats and academics with homes in the American Redoubt as well and it would be wise for folks out there to take note of their historical actions.
Something else that is going on that will effect all of Oregon. A proposal to ban “Assault Weapons” and so called “High Capacity” magazines. It started as a submittal of Initiative Petition 42 late last week by an interfaith group based in Portland. Which 42 was quickly withdrawn and then re-submitted as 43, to correct minor wording errors to keep from being rejected. Using an anti-gun protest rally on Saturday in Portland (The Peoples Republic of) the interfaith group was able to garner over three thousand signatures. One thousand valid signatures are only needed for the States Attorney General to begin a ballot title drafting process. Once completed, the petitioners then must get over 88,000 signatures by July to put it on the ballot for November. The initiative which is opposed by pretty much anyone against their rights being taken away (left, right and the middle) will file an appeal to the Oregon Supreme Court and during this process no signatures can be gathered. The battle for our rights continues and I wanted to get the word out to readers of this blog and for the Oregonians who come here that may of not heard about this yet. Please do what you can to help oppose this flagrant attempt at tyranny.
Can’t wait to hear Gov. Scott “lead” JWR in survival tactics. Or tell Pat what knife he should use to skin a deer. Maybe he can correct Avalanche Lily’s canning technique. Just what CAN he do?
The time has come, folks, to realize that nobody is looking out for us in Washington. Only thing our elected officials are looking out for is themselves. The swamp is thriving like never before, contrary to recent promises of change. Politicians humor us and tell us what we want to hear, but at the end of the day they all gather for a cocktail, slap each other on the back, and grin about how the masses are being manipulated. Time to wake up folks, you are being led like sheep.
We must continue to look to each other as we create the liberty for ourselves and others that we desire. Those who promise to “drain the swamp” or anything else that we feel too small to do alone, plays down to our fears.
