The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods:

SurvivalBlog presents another edition of The Survivalist’s Odds ‘n Sods— a collection of news bits and pieces that are relevant to the modern survivalist and prepper from “HJL”. Texas is showing America how it’s done with the aftermath of hurricane Harvey. There are some amazing stories of normal people helping others through some tough times. Sadly, there are also the expected stories of crooks taking advantage.

Electronic Security

A researcher recently revealed that a server containing over 711 million email addresses was breached exposing account logins and passwords. You can check if your account was possibly one of those in this breach (or others) by using the web site https://haveibeenpwned.com/ . However, it is important to note that just because your email address (or account login) was compromised, it doesn’t necessarily mean that your email was hacked.

The site will let you know which data breach your account was affected by. You can then make sure that your password for that site has been changed. (you do use different passwords for different sites, right?). Many sites require your email address to be used for your account login, but unless your computer/mobile device itself is hacked or the databreach involved your email provider, your email address hasn’t been hacked – just the account listed was hacked. RFID tracking

One of the drawbacks to RFID tracking is the size of the chips involved. to date, they have been largish and cumbersome to use. Now, however, researchers have developed an RFID chip that is so small it can be embedded in a human cell. The chip itself is 22 microns (or 1/5 the width of a human hair). It requires a special tag reader to read the small signal, but researchers are hoping to use it to track cancer and other such cellular activity. At least that’s what they say. I can think of a dozen other uses including military, spy and monetary without to much effort. Imagine a $20 bill that can be scanned as you walk by. Conspiracy Theory, here we come. Faith-Based Apocalyptic Series

Reader J.C. sent in this link on a new faith-based apocalyptic series: “Daily Bread” premiering September 8th. I’m always a bit apprehensive when I hear the term “faith-based” because so often, the producers and directors don’t really have a clue. However, I’m willing to give it a try just because it promises not to have gratuitous sex and pointless violence just to sell the show.

Ballistic Protection for Children

Reader John Cylc sent in this article he wrote on the Ally One, a Level IIIA concealable shield that you can stuff in your child’s backpack that will provide ballistic protection. While rated up to .44 Magnum, there is a video showing it being tested with a .50 S&W Magnum. Yes, it’s gonna hurt, but it did stop the 440gr bullet. You can use the insert in backpacks, briefcases, purses and anything else that will accept it’s size. You may not always be able to be right there with your child to protect them and this can give them the edge they need.

Houston Hurricane Issues

We are hearing lots of wonderful stories coming out of the Houston area where people are coming together to help each other and overcome the life-threatening difficulties that hurricane Harvey has thrown at them. There are some serious issues though. Crosby, TX has a huge chemical plant that manufactures chemicals that must be kept cooled to be safe. They have lost public utilities and now they’ve lost their backup generators due to the water. At this time, there is very little they can do except to evacuate the plant and the surrounding neighborhoods as they expect the chemicals to go critical and ignite/explode.

There are also reports of fake DHS officials warning residents to evacuate just so they can rob the home. Houston officials are asking people to request official badges and credentials of the organization they are claiming to work for.

Snowflake March

The anti-Trump march (pretending to be against racism) from Charlottesville to DC has run into a bit of a problem. It rained on the first day of the march. Within six miles of starting on Monday, had lost almost all of its marchers. Their numbers have gone from a whopping 200 down to only 35. I guess marching for a cause is too much like work. There isn’t anyone to beat up or even innocent property owners to vandalize. It is apparently much more fun to wear masks and run around like animals threatening people.

Preschool Field Trip

The Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning (DECAL – there’s one of those acronyms again where the name is shoehorned into an acronym) is having apoplectic fits this week because Holdheide Academy in Woodstock, Georgia took the children on a parent-approved field trip to a local gun range to learn about gun safety as part of their lesson on Annie Oakley. They were able to handle a rifle just like Oakley would have used. DECAL apparently would rather have the children listen to stories of parents abusing their children by making them transgender than they would by learning real history.
