This weekly column features media from around the American Redoubt region. (Idaho, Montana, eastern Oregon, eastern Washington, and Wyoming.) Much of the region is also more commonly known as The Inland Northwest.
- The end of an era of informal transnational civility, near Havre, Montana: New reaction as construction of new border road ramps up amid concerns. JWR’s Comments: I have an friend who is a rancher on Montana’s High Line, who is also a volunteer firefighter. He told me that it is not uncommon for firefighters to cut border fences when fighting fires. Wildfires pay no attention to national borders.
- The latest from the North Idaho Expedition Rove couple: Clearing Raw Land to Build Our Dream Workshop (From Scratch). JWR’s Comments: They are transplants from Yorkshire, England, and Texas, and are fitting in nicely. They obviously have some great neighbors to show them the ropes — and the snatch cables. It is good to see Andy now wearing full safety gear. But note that Kevlar chainsaw chaps provide less protection when using electric chainsaws. (Gas saws use use clutches, but electric saws are direct drive, so there isn’t clutch to bog down and disengage.) Oh, and by the way, never lean in close a running wood chipper. Stand back a safe distance!
- CWD Cases Rise In Wyoming’s Deer And Elk Populations.
- Former Idaho Governor Dirk Kempthorne dies at 74.
- New state record burbot hoisted out of Kootenai River.
